Amazing, this just barely missed crashing into the bridge and exploding, no fatalities as of yet.

This airline has a terrible safety record with 4 recent hull loses with fatalities in 3 of them.

A small TransAsia flight crashed into a Taipei harbor Wednesday, injuring "a number" of the estimated 53 passengers who are still reportedly awaiting rescue.

Flight GE 235 crashed shortly after takeoff, via the Straits Times:

The ATR-72 turboprop aircraft with 58 onboard was flying from Taipei to the offshore island of Kinmen when it crashed into the Keelung River after apparently ramming into a highway viaduct, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) said. Taiwan's United Daily News said about 10 people have been sent to hospital, and more than 40 are still awaiting rescue.

The New Taipei City Fire Department has despatched five rescue teams, equipped with speed boats, to the accident site near the Nanyang Bridge in Xizhi district, CNA said.

Update—2/4 12:15 am:

Several news outlets are reporting fatalities—anywhere from two to eight or nine passengers were reportedly killed in the crash, while dozens of survivors were hospitalized, say Reuters, the BBC and the Straits Times.

The Guardian is reporting that the taxi driver whose car was clipped by the plane suffered a head injury and concussion but was hospitalized with stable vital signs.

People actually survived that?

Looks like 8-10 dead. Pilot called in an emergency after an engine flame out. If you watch, you can see the left engine is feathering.

If it hit 10 feet sooner, it would have exploded.

It just seems like the plane smashes into something and sideways. My guess would be that an entire row of seats would come crashing down on whomever was sitting on the left side of that plane and the impact would kill off everyone on the right. I don't know much about how planes are built but it just seems like few people would survive that sort of impact.

Well; the verdict is in!

Stay out of Asian Airlines. Simple- swim, you're chancs are better.
It depends. Singapore Airlines is rated the nest in the world.

Another video, better quality.

That picture is so awful.

I saw it on the news this morning and apparently there are about 15 people still unaccounted for who they believe were in the front of the plane. They're also speculating that the pilot gave off a Mayday call.

Can you imagine if they had hit all of those apartment buildings? And ya think the people in those cars will have nightmares for years? I know I would.

It appears that the pilots were able to aim away from buildings, the plane was attempting to turn around and land, and the sink rate was too fast. The airplane was only 10 months old.

I heard that it was a new plane too. That's strange, very strange.

Have there been any updates since early this morning? The challenge they were having was that it was nighttime there. They were hauling the debris to the shore to try to turn it rightside up.

Greetings, beefheart. :2wave:

Wow! What a picture! I can't imagine my brain being able to rationally process what my eyes were seeing, knowing it was not a stunt - I'd be screaming in horror! What a nightmare, knowing people were going to die!

All things considered, the pilots were able to miss the buildings and the bridge and impact at a fairly low speed and fairly level. They managed to keep the pitch up, bleeding off speed and preventing a nose dive which would have been 100% fatal.

Serious issues with this airlne, they crashed an ATR back in July which killed 48, they crashed a cargo plane due to icing, had a plane overshoot and roll into a ditch, etc. I didn't even realize there was another airport in Taipei. Spent many a morning at the international airport there. 12 hour flight, land at 6 am, have a few weird beers in the bar and catch a connection...LOL

Simply amazing video. Stunning. Imagine being in that car? I'd have wet myself.

It's only speculation on my part, but it kind of reminds me of the "Sully" Sullivan crash in the Hudson several years back in that it looks to me like the pilot knew he was in trouble and was tying to splash down in the river to save as many as he could. It looks as if just clearing the apartment buildings, he lost control and started to go into a roll and hit the bridge - probably coming in way too fast to actually accomplish what he hoped to.

The fact the pilot was able to get the plane into the water likely saved the dozens who walked away and he is a hero for doing so.

I don't know what the cause is, but we seem to be having a rash of plane crashes this past decade or perhaps it's just the media flood that makes them more apparent. Either way, it would terrify those who aren't regular, seasoned flyers.
