The Army has deleted a tweet posted Thursday afternoon referring to “chinks” in the armor of its Special Operations capabilities after receiving numerous accusations of racism.

The tweet read: “Chinks in special ops’ digital and physical armor poses challenges, experts say.” It included a link to an Army news release with a similar headline that has since been changed. A search on Google Friday morning still showed the old headline:

And once again ignorance of basic language reveals itself.

Im reminded of the niggardly debacle.

I do not think there is much that can be done about this, there is too much opposition interest in ensuring certain words have the worst possible association from here on out.

Yeah.

Gotta keeps those chinks out.

Seriously?

Some people need to read a damn book, apparently.

I confess that while I knew "chink" was a slur for Asians, I didn't know it was inappropriate to use it in a phrase like " chink in the armor". I realize language is always changing but I missed that one.

LOL - the two options are 'chink' in the armor or 'kink' in the armor. Not many choices, there.

Now I favor 'kink' in the armor - that, where I grew up, was how we said it . . . but 'chink' works just as well for that phrase. Aside that, kink is as sex term - something that only took on new meaning when I got older.

I really hate how people tend to skew every single thing toward 'racism' when it has nothing to do with it. As far as I know - there is no alternative that would have gotten the message across. If there is, by all means, these racist-screamers need to implement it and stop being a chink in the chain.

How could you not get a grin out of this? Some folks seriously need to lighten up a bit.

Considering the Chinese government's extensive espionage, cyber hacking, disregard for patents, etc., perhaps the subtlety of "Chinks in the Armor" is well placed.

What if the headline had said "Army considers new slant in strategy"... Slant is a euphemism for Vietnamese. Is that word forever ruined now due to sensitivity?

Yeah, this PC crap will ruin the nation....

Good point. Though I don't think euphamism means what you think it means. :)

eu·phe·mism
ˈyo͞ofəˌmizəm/Submit
noun
a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

Racial epithets are euphemism's by default when speaking of another person's race itself is considered insulting (as in, referring to a another race in a disparaging manner), immediately translating into an insult itself.

I never would have considered a racial slur to be the less harsh choice or more mild alternative. Slant is certainly harsher than Vietnamese. The N word is certainly harsher than Black. Maybe I am misinterpreting it, though.

I think people like to raise a stink over words like this because it gives them power. It clearly was not used in a racist way and it's a word with a common meaning apart from the slur. We need to stop caving into PC nonsense like this.

But if you use kink they will think you are a sexual deviant...

If these problems are from budget cutbacks does that make them niggardly chinks?

If you considered the Vietnamese monsters, then "slant" was probably the safe go-to word in homogeneous groups. It's all a matter of perspective.

I mean, when we think of legal or medical terms now, those were euphemisms themselves once upon a time. For example, vagina in Latin means "sheath"; anus means "ring".
