How and why Geer died on that afternoon in August 2013 have remained a mystery, as police and prosecutors have declined comment for 17 months. But late Friday night, under a court order obtained by lawyers for the Geer family, Fairfax released more than 11,000 pages of documents that shed new light on the police shooting.

It's probably best to wait for the investigation to conclude, rather than try and base a judgment on a one-sided presentation. As far as 17 months for the length of the investigation, it would depend on how many witnesses there are, whether subpoenas had to be obtained in order to speak with all the witnesses (that adds a lot of time), how long the usual investigation of a killing by a police officer takes in that jurisdiction, whether the feds are involved (which may add time), etc.
