Greece’s new prime minister wants Germany to pay for Nazi war crimes

they probably did but weren't so on the verge of bankruptcy that they were willing to make international scene about it.

when?

versailles? Well the whole point of Morgenthau was to absolutely cripple the german industry so they can never wage war again. Some of the advisers were eagerly anticipating turning germany into agrarian country. However, when this leaked it sort of backfired because Goebbels used it to inspire germans to fight to the end.

 and would have proven a powerful unifier of the German people, just as Versailles had been.

Germany has poured billions into saving Greece from itself. If Greece wants to try to dig up this crap now, Germany should tell them to enjoy life outside the EU.

When did Germany pay for its actions?

The Greek politicians who took out loans without public consoltation (often misleading the public, and at some point under military rule) are responsible, but i don´t see why the Greek people should suffer for decisions they where purposefully excluded from. Indeed even when the Greek PM wanted to put the latest bailout to a referendum Merkel threatend to call it off. And again what Syriza is calling for isnt necessary complete non payment, Britain was still paying for the War/Marshall plan untill 2006, surely similar leniancy could be applied to Greece, avoiding cuts that merely make the situation worse.

What did they " pay " ?? Oh nothing really.

They just had a few of their Cities reduced to ash, ( Dresden, Hanburg ) and over 7 Million of their military personnel and civilians dead.

I can't believe there are people out there who're defending this.

Where were the calls for German WII reparations when Greece was borrowing Billions from German banks ?

Where was the call for German WWII reparations when Germany was coordinating and offering Billions in Greek bailouts ?

Syriza doesn't want to stiff Germany for the enitire amount ? How generous of him. He wants to make a deal ?

How do you negotiate with a guy who's willing to exploit the deaths of his Country men just to get out of paying a debt ?

They will pay as soon as Germany gets paid for the Roman occupation... and be sure to let the Middle East know when the money comes in because they are waiting for reparations for the Greek occupation by King Alexander.

I understand the slippery slope backwards in time argument, but Germany was not occupied by Rome.

Greece is responsible for its debt because it's contractually and legally obligate to pay back it's creditors. Greece is responsible for its debt because not stiffing your creditors is what responsible grown up individuals do. Greece is acting like a bratty child who's being forced to make amends for its mistakes. It's literally throwing a temper tantrum, that's being heard the world over.

Plus, the Greeks just elected the same type of people, ( Socialist ) who drove them into massive debt in the first place.

It's not Germany's fault Greece entered into the Union under false pretenses, violated the terms of the Treaty THEY SIGNED, ran up massive deficits that exceeded the limitations THEY AGREED TO in the Maasticht Treaty and then lied to everyone by refusing to disclose their financial issues until it was too late.

Trying to justify NOT paying back your debt by using a War that ended 70 years ago, and exploiting the deaths of your own Countrymen to justify what's essentially FRAUD is a particularity low life thing to do. It's no surprise that this their new PM would resort to these antics.

He IS a Socialist.

Ever considered that taking monetary credit was a preplanned scheme to force Deutchland to pay for the crimes they did and neglected since WW2?

I am expecting details from the Deutch about how much was borrowed from whom during WW2. The PM of Greece has left it to the balance ranging from the world wars era to determine how much they really owe the EU.

Unless he is buying time with this.

No, never considered it.

If it was it was fraud all the same and Greece still owes Germany billions.

This is nothing but a low life Socialist exploiting the deaths of his Country men so he doesn't have to honor his Country's debt

He has his own countrymen supporting the position. What now?

it was a part of holy roman empire..your link proves me right.it is not a history forum.dont troll the thread

no, Germania Predates the Holy Roman empire.

 and would have proven a powerful unifier of the German people, just as Versailles had been.

Not once they're conquered. WWI was mostly a stalemate. It didn't end with berlin in ruins, which their fuhrer himself tried to orchestra once it was clear they would lose.

If the allies sincerely wanted to turn it into farmland to prevent germany from any opportunity at instigating another world war, they could have done so

He has his own countrymen supporting the position. What now?

Lol....

Of-course they do. For nearly a decade they lived high on the hog.

It was a Socialist dream land where a massive public sector provided great pay, awesome benefits and public sector jobs.

But like all Socialist utopian iniatives it was doomed to fail. They ran out of other people's money.

They're debt exceeded their revenues substantially and to make up for the lack of revenue they borrowed massive amounts of money and distributed toxic securities throughout European banks.

And why wouldn't anyone lend them money ? According to the Greek Government they were well within the limits spelled out under the Maastricht treaty.

Problem was the Greek Government was corrupt and withheld vital data that would have exposed their massive deficit spending.

It doesn't surprise me that the Greek people support this idiot. Theyre predisposed to a corrupt Socialist agenda.

Now, they're really screwed. No bank or Country in their right mind is ever going to buy another Greek bond.

As a Country and a people all they know is the same cradle to the grave system that got them in this position in the first place.

 at the cost of never ending war, possibly. Assuming that there was no Cold War, requiring the standing up of an industrialized nation-state Germany by both sides. Good luck selling that counterfactual.

 was there a state called 'germany' when romans occupied that region ?

lets post seriously
There was an agreement after WW2 that settled this, was there not?

Those agreements aren't binding to a Government who doesn't feel the need to honor its own Financial contracts.

Greece is making it up as they go along. The only agreement they will honor is the kind that forgives its massive pile of debt.

Oh and Im sure there will have to be a rider in that agreement " stating that they'l'll receive more bailout money.

At no cost ofcourse.

So they will run out of this credited money and they will not be able to gain more credit because no other bank will loan them in the future. That is what is going to happen?

What about development of third kind. The animosity caused between Greece and EU is sure to be exploited from other world leading countries, such as: Russians (same religion), Chinese, Indians, etc.

They could land Greeks money in return for anti-EU and USA "favors."

After the seismic victory of Greece’s leftist Syriza party in national polling Sunday, the country’s new prime minister, 40-year-old Alexis Tsipras, is leading all of Europe down an uncertain path.

Syriza has vowed to renegotiate the crippling debts saddled on the Greek economy by European lenders — a move that some fear could threaten the unity of the eurozone. Tsipras and his allies, meanwhile, see their ascension as a historic opportunity, as WorldViews discussed here

Syriza, in particular, has been outspoken about the need for Germany to atone for its past in Greece, or at least show a bit more leniency now as compensation. Tsipras has campaigned on the issue for more than a year, including in the build-up to Sunday's election. "We are going to demand debt reduction, and the money Germany owes us from World War II, including reparations," he said earlier this month.

A 2013 study carried out by the previous Greek government of defeated Prime Minister Antonis Samaras estimated that Germany owed Greece some $200 billion for damages incurred during the Nazi occupation, the cost of rebuilding destroyed infrastructure as well as loans Nazi authorities forced Greece to pay between 1942 and 1944. The Samaras government, whose critics accused of being handmaidens to Brussels' harsh mandates, did little with the report. Another advocacy group claims that the sum owed to Greece could be as much as $677 billion.

You don't have to go back too far to find a precedent for what the Syriza government are asking the troika to consider. In 1953 50% of West Germany's war-debt was written off by its western creditors including the US, Britain and France. The remaining portion was repaid but the term of that repayment was extended by a further 15 years. I suspect Mrs Merkel and her attack dogs will suffer a little historical amnesia when this matter is raised.

The only ones with amnesia are the ssupporters of Syriza's actions.

They forget that Greece entered into the Union under false pretenses and they forget they spent well beyond the limits Spelled out in a Treaty THEY SIGNED.

And where were Merkels " attack dogs " when German banks were buying up Greek debt under the pretense that Greek debt was a safe investment ?

Syrzia is exploiting the deaths of his own Country Men just so he can justify welching on hundreds of Billions of dollars in debt.

Debt that the Greek Government incured while they misrepresented their positions on massive debts and continued to borrow and distribute toxic securities throughout European banks.

its a pretty low life stategy and it should fool no one..

Tsipras, but who cares.

Its his party and ideology that are exploiting the deaths of their own citizens just to get out of paying their debts.

Austerity isn't a policy, its a consequence. A consequence of massive borrowing and spendng.

You're defending this guy and you're laughing at me ?
