After the seismic victory of Greece’s leftist Syriza party in national polling Sunday, the country’s new prime minister, 40-year-old Alexis Tsipras, is leading all of Europe down an uncertain path.

Syriza has vowed to renegotiate the crippling debts saddled on the Greek economy by European lenders — a move that some fear could threaten the unity of the eurozone. Tsipras and his allies, meanwhile, see their ascension as a historic opportunity, as WorldViews discussed here

Syriza, in particular, has been outspoken about the need for Germany to atone for its past in Greece, or at least show a bit more leniency now as compensation. Tsipras has campaigned on the issue for more than a year, including in the build-up to Sunday's election. "We are going to demand debt reduction, and the money Germany owes us from World War II, including reparations," he said earlier this month.

A 2013 study carried out by the previous Greek government of defeated Prime Minister Antonis Samaras estimated that Germany owed Greece some $200 billion for damages incurred during the Nazi occupation, the cost of rebuilding destroyed infrastructure as well as loans Nazi authorities forced Greece to pay between 1942 and 1944. The Samaras government, whose critics accused of being handmaidens to Brussels' harsh mandates, did little with the report. Another advocacy group claims that the sum owed to Greece could be as much as $677 billion.

They will pay as soon as Germany gets paid for the Roman occupation... and be sure to let the Middle East know when the money comes in because they are waiting for reparations for the Greek occupation by King Alexander.

 the modern German state didn't occupy Greece anymore than the modern Italian state occupied Germany.

Greece is angrily grasping at straws, throwing a tantrum to refuse to acknowledge that the gravy train can end. I look forward to seeing how it goes for them. :popcorn2:

Europe was meant to be in constant turmoil. The new PM of Greece is sabre rattling for what? To me he comes off foolish.

you are trolling my thread. you are never conservative enough when it comes to muslims .

All this demonstrates to me is that a person can win an election in Greece by promising free stuff to the population paid for by other peoples money. I guess if the Greeks are gullible enough to believe that any of these promises will ever come to fruition they are going to get exactly what they deserve.

Germany has paid others for war crimes. Why not Greece too? Many want Japan to pay for comfort women they took. Womenin Korea and China want compensation for those war crimes. Australia said sorry to Aboriginals and has paid compensation to stolen generation. America gives casinos and land to Native Americans. Many in Africa want Obama to pay Africa for slavery trade colonialism. Those Nobama people want compensation bad. It is not unusual for a party to seek compensation for past crime and damage. The Nazi did some bad stuff. So did Imperial Japan. I want Japan to pay our diggers compo for their pow camps. They were very bad. Like Changi POW camp and others. Also, Japan attacked the mainland more than once. They owe us for the damage.

The world made Germany pay full cost of WW1. Why not full cost of WW2? And also Japan. Plus, what do the Ottomans owe us? :)

During World War II, Greek prime ministers Georgios Tsolakoglou, Konstantinos Logothetopoulos and Ioannis Rallis cooperated with the Axis authorities. They instigated suppression measures like the creation of armed "anti-communist" and "anti-gangster" Security Battalions. Greek National-Socialist parties helped German authorities identify and deport Greek Jews. About one thousand Greeks from Greece and more from the Soviet Union joined the Waffen-SS.

Like the Vichy French government, Greeks were no better. Now they are doing all this because they are broke. Greece and Germany are both in NATO. Its pathetic.

it was a part of holy roman empire..your link proves me right.it is not a history forum.dont troll the thread

Sure. And the Holy Roman Empire was a different state than the Roman Empire, and was also different from Germania.

It's like claiming that you belong to the Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire, rather than the modern state of Turkey.

:doh I'm trying to point out to you that there is a 500 year difference in the two things that you were claiming were the same. I used a local example, figuring that would make sense for you and allow you to see the analogy.

its name was holy roman empire ,not germania

Well then on that note it wasn't Greece at the time, it was The Third Reich.

"Greece’s new prime minister wants Germany to pay for Nazi war crimes"

He may want to tread lightly lest the Germans call in the loans.

I agree.

Besides, playing the Nazi card is a rotten thing to do. In fact, since its not really the same country, I don't even know if its a legitimate gripe. After WWII there were two countries, West Germany and East Germany. Then they merged into one country. Is it even legally the same country that Hitler ruled?

if the thread was about greece and turkey I bet they would be defending greece.right wing westerner style ...

In my opinion, the time to demand reparations has long passed. This looks like a last ditch effort to get out of paying their debt, which they brought on themselves with their irresponsible fiscal policy. Grasping at straws is the phrase that comes to mind here.
