On ‘Face the Nation,’ Senators Feinstein, McCain Call For More U.S. Troops In M.E.

Re: On ‘Face the Nation,’ Senators Feinstein, McCain Call For More U.S. Troops In M.E

The problem is with what happens AFTER the city (or any other area) is "taken". Returning control back to the locals (the original situation) accomplishes absolutely nothing yet that has been our "plan". We are engaged in an endless game of whack-a-mole in areas not under any control at all. Essentially, we pay bribes to the local "officials" for the privilege of zapping a few terrorists and then more bribes to allow us to help establish, arm and train local "security" forces to be placed under their control.

Well one does have to have a starting point. I was looking more at the point of ISIS and their supporters being driven from the city. As that can be done.

Do you think with what Sisi of Egypt is saying and getting their Holymen out and about might be part of the solution? Especially after the enemy is driven off and will conduct their suicide bombings.

Re: On ‘Face the Nation,’ Senators Feinstein, McCain Call For More U.S. Troops In M.E

McCain wants perpetual war. what else is new?

Re: On ‘Face the Nation,’ Senators Feinstein, McCain Call For More U.S. Troops In M.E

Nope. They'd just move to another city. Weeding out ISIS would require a long term brutal occupation, and by the time ISIS is destroyed we'll have built up enough ill will among the populace for another ISIS to pop up.

In many ways, selling out Assad turns out to have been a blunder.

So you think it is more difficult for 5 or 6 Armies than one. That the odds don't get easier? Except where do they go when surrounded. Since it is much easier to surround an enemy with more than one Army.

Nobody wants war-but some things are worth fighting for. Even a high ranking lefty senator (mine) is calling for them.

If you haven't figured it out yet-ISIS isn't going away and the lefts politicians appear tired of hiding behind partisan dogma. :2wave:

1. assume IS is eliminated. what then?

2. how much more are you willing to pay in taxes to fund the perpetual war? a dollar amount will be fine.

A high-ranking Neo Con Democratic Senator.
Or haven't you figured that out by now?

If you haven't figured it out yet-ISIS isn't going away and the lefts politicians appear tired of hiding behind partisan dogma.

Along with the Neo Con Menendez.

Apparently DEMs can think for themselves on the issues of the day, versus marching goose-step as GOPs do.

And tell us, why do you continue to accuse the President of supporting terrorism for PERSONAL reasons .

You continue to forget that it was your own Boehner who couldn't get the votes from his own caucus on the Grand Bargain in 2011.
A continual problem for Boehner, since he lost 67 members of his own caucus on the Cromnibus.
Good thing the President played the bi-partisan stooge and gave him 57 votes, don't you think ?

Well whaddya know.....Diane Feinstein with McCain are out publicly challenging BO and his mental issues of his ideology. This is indeed a good day to Start a Monday. Another Democrat telling BO how he has got it wrong. What say ye?

Two influential senators are calling on President Barack Obama to send more U.S. ground troops to hotspots around the Middle East.

The suggestion by Republican John McCain and Democrat Dianne Feinstein is a direct challenge to the president, who has said he doesn’t want to increase the U.S. military presence in Yemen despite the deteriorating security condition in that country.

Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, says the U.S. needs more human intelligence in the region and to not rely so heavily on intelligence gathered by technical means.....snip~

That may be the case DF :2wave: But again, how does that stop ISIS or AQ. Who won't magically disappear. Should we not get involved in anything and let the world Turn with all others getting involved into everything.

Re: On ‘Face the Nation,’ Senators Feinstein, McCain Call For More U.S. Troops In M.E

Good morning Rocket

I tend to agree with your take here. Even more so than in Afghanistan, it is virtually impossible from a distance to tell who is the enemy in the battle with ISIS. It's one thing to be able to bomb ISIS encampments outside of cities and feel pretty safe that you're only hitting enemy positions. But in cities that have been overrun by ISIS combatants, who have terrorized residence into support or death, and when an ISIS combatant can look identical to a friendly, it's virtually impossible for an outside army on the ground to take the battle to them. It will take Iraqis themselves, those who know who is friendly and who isn't, to weed out the enemy and US troops pushing forward on the ground are likely to suffer serious casualties unless they're prepared to annihilate friendlies along with the enemy in a torched earth offensive.

The U.S. cannot afford to let jihadist war criminals who are our sworn enemies shelter among civilian populations. I do not believe a few thousand jihadists can have terrorized several hundred thousand or even a million "friendly" people in a city into supporting them. A much more likely explanation is that a good part of the population of cities like Raqqa and Mosul and Ramadi sides with them, more or less.

Since even before 9/11, both the U.S. government and many people here and in the West have been determined to deny the fact that a great many people in the Arab world--the masses so many Americans comfort themselves by thinking of as good, friendly Muslims--feel some sympathy with jihad. That willful blindness often shows itself as the claim that jihadism is a perversion of true Islam.

But the fact people who say this are desperate to deny is that many of the horrors the jihadists engage in are authorized by the most orthodox Islamic texts. Anyone who doubts that should look through [/I]Reliance of the Traveler,[/I] the 14th century text that is as authoritative and detailed a statement of the rules of shari'ah as there is. It may not specifically call for two men accused of homosexual acts to be pushed off a tall building in Mosul, as was done the other day--but it calls for them to be put to death just the same.

I recently read that a journalist who had spent time among the jihadists operating in Syria and Iraq reported that they hoped to kill hundreds of millions of unbelievers. Fanatics like that cannot be reasoned with, or allowed to survive and grow in power. Every day they seem to be succeeding, the prestige of the U.S. suffers, and their ability to recruit followers increases. Mr. Obama's half-measures have saved Baghdad from being overrun--but that's about it. A couple carrier-based jets patrol here or there over Iraq, occasionally dropping a bomb or firing a missile, or now and then a drone destroys someone's car, or a cruise missile blows up some structure--and those pinpricks are sold as making war on the enemy.

In Syria, these people have gotten even stronger since the U.S. first bombed them late last summer. This administration's weak and haphazard foreign policy has allowed Libya to devolve into a failed state and hotbed of Islamic jihad--another Somalia. It is only despite Mr. Obama's efforts that Gen. Sisi now rules in Egypt, and Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Obama favored, is gone. Thanks to his disastrous policy, U.S. influence in Yemen--a very important theater in the war against Islamic jihadists--apparently has now been lost. If not for the efforts of Chad and Cameroon, jihadists would be expanding their influence in Nigeria even further. And in the background, the greatest threat of all to this country continues to grow, as Iran keeps moving steadily toward manufacturing nuclear weapons.

Heya FMW. :2wave: I think you are Right. Time to treat the problem with seriousness.

I for one am sick of sacrificing our young people on the altars of failed ideology, and I don't care whose ideology it is. If we are not going into a country with a declaration of war from Congress and with overwhelming force and license to kill anybody who resists us and with intention of bringing that country to full and unconditional surrender, then we should not expend our blood and treasure on what will almost certainly be failure to accomplish lasting peace.

And once unconditional surrender is accomplished, our game plan should be to install the government and policies we want that country to have--think what we did in Germany and Japan in WWII--and then and then only will we return the sovereignty of that nation to its people.

If we aren't willing to do that, I say let's keep our men and women home.

Heya SN. :2wave: Yeah I know.....but take a look at what the assessment is and that's not counting ISIS opening up a front in Lebanon.

Wall Street Journal published a splashy story yesterday detailing the grim reality that US airstrikes have not curbed the terror army's advance in Syria:

More than three months of U.S. airstrikes in Syria have failed to prevent Islamic State militants from expanding their control in that country, according to U.S. and independent assessments, raising new concerns about President Barack Obama’s military strategy in the Middle East. While U.S. bombing runs and missile strikes have put Islamic State forces on the defensive in Iraq, they haven’t had the same kind of impact in Syria. Instead, jihadist fighters have enlarged their hold in Syria since the U.S. started hitting the group’s strongholds there in September, according to the new estimates. Islamic State’s progress in Syria is partly the result of the U.S. decision to focus its military efforts on Iraq, where the militant group has seized major parts of the country and declared them part of a new Islamic caliphate. The U.S.-led military effort has pushed the forces out of some key battlegrounds in Iraq. But Syria still serves as a haven for Islamic State fighters...
