Nope. The Crown Prince has long been selected, approved by the former King and the Royal Family. It's the next Crown Prince that might see some jockeying.

    [indent]Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz was the fifth of his brothers to take the throne and became king in 2005, reports Caroline Hawley

The announcement, made early on Friday, said his brother, Salman, had become king....

The late king's half brother Moqren has been named the new crown prince, the official statement said.
    Never mind, I sit corrected.

King Salman called on the royal family's Allegiance Council to recognise Moqren as his crown prince and heir.
Ah. No I don't. That is the council that (according to the current set up) is supposed to actually name the Crown Prince. It has representation from all of Ibn Saud's sons who also had sons (effectively, the senior leadership of the ruling family), so it's supposed to be able to give a "corporate" decision that minimizes the possibility of infighting and splitting up.

I think they'll be fine anyway. They've always handed the throne between brothers. Every king since the first one (Abdulazziz) have been brothers. Sure didn't cause any instability in the past, and it won't now.

When they run out of sons of Abdulaziz, there might be something to worry about.

Well that's the point of a two-step succession process. The Crown Prince has probably been effectively running much of Saudi national policy for some time now if the kings' health had been that seriously deteriorating, so any changeover friction is minimized.

Sounds much like the socialist/marxists of the last century.

Good riddance to the useless putz.

I detest all monarchies...but the Saudi one ranks right up there with the worst, imo.

Do I think much will change? No.
