House GOP drops controversial abortion bill ahead of Roe v. Wade anniversary | Fox News

My my my, those GOP members have been busy creating jobs bill after jobs bill, but managed to write legislation to overturn Roe v Wade,
then they decided to kill their own bill because they didn't want to offend female GOP members. Hypocrites.

What morons.
wasting taxpayer time money writing stupid bills, no wonder the congress has a low favorability rating.

From your own article, it appears there were real concerns with the Bill. It was not about "offending" female GOP congress members.

But some Republicans, including female members of Congress, objected to that requirement, saying that many women feel too distressed to report rapes and should not be penalized. A 2013 Justice Department report calculated that just 35 percent of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to police.

"The issue becomes, we're questioning the woman's word," Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., said earlier Wednesday. "We have to be compassionate to women when they're in a crisis situation."

There were also objections to the bill's exemption for minors who are victims of incest and have reported the incident.

"So the exception would apply to a 16-year-old but not a 19-year-old?" said Rep. Charles Dent, R-Pa. "I mean, incest is incest."

:doh

Dumb. Nothing is there that couldn't have been worked out, and limiting abortion past pain-capable is a popular position in the US. Force the President to veto it or Senate Democrats to filibuster it, and make them go on record as well to the left of the American populace.

I would rather that Republicans focus on ending government funded abortions, instead of working so hard to define limits which give us these sort of problems to contend with.

a 20-week limit with exceptions looks to be the right approach and would garner modest support from Democrats. The hospital where my wife works at use that as a date for allowing 5-day bereavement leave for late-term miscarriages.

So... in other words... the approach that looks good on paper... but allows 99% of abortions to happen. Okie lol.

Would Democrats vote for anything else?

Why not step to the plate and behind your convictions of the matter. Why not try come out in the open and overturn Roe v. Wade? Why the rhetoric? :)

I'm not allowed to express an opinion contrary to your view of Republicans?

Oh, you most certainly are. It's just funny that the get to work mentality of the GOP is just legislation which doesn't really change anything in the grand scheme of things.

With 246 members, you are bound to get a variety of legislative priorities. Clearly some felt that this legislation would be effective, and at the very least would bring parity to the various state laws.

It's effective in that it addresses about 1% of abortions. If Obama tried to pass an idea supposedly addressing an issue, but only dealing with 1% of it, there would be a public outcry of how ineffective government is. Are Republicans ineffective now?

The republican party is simply a party of cowards anymore and this was nothing more then a feeble attempt to cater to conservatives. Then they could go back home and say " look what we did"

It's going to be a long 2 years for the Republican Congress if this is their first shot at Liberal policies.

Here Here!
If Roe v Wade is so bad and goes against your moral principles, then just overturn it and take what may come.

They have the numbers. They have their mandate. I'm sure they could do it with the support of the American people. No? :)

SCOTUS will never allow Roe to be overturned any more than they will allow the 2nd Amendment to be repealed.

Then what's the point of addressing 1% of abortions? Rhetoric? How can they possibly claim any sort of victory on the issue? Or is the get work mentality of the GOP only for the papers?

The same reason politicians are always wasting time with these things Hatuey. Perception. Demand. Lobbyists. And so on. You already know that - and the GOP hardly holds the monopoly on this behavior.

I didn't say they did. I'm just going to watch all of the conservatives who were chest beating about this mandate the GOP has excuse their party's rhetoric materialize into nothing for the next two years.

The conservatives did it because their constituents wanted them to do it. Just like anti-gunners were voted in to change the gun laws but they only offer this symbolic **** Just like all of the anti-war candidates were voted in in 2006 to end the war in Iraq (and put on a good show in Congress, but did nothing until Bush started the process and Obama finished it).

If the conservatives didn't do these things, their constituents would be pissed. You and I both know this.
