Sue them for what? Abject stupidity and ignorance? Lack of journalistic skills? Are any of those illegal?

LoL... apparently the French aren't so enamoured with Fox "news" style of completing making things up for a gullible audience.

It would have to be for libel, and the odds of winning are remote. Not sure if this would be tried in US court or French court, but I would think US court most likely and there is no way they can win there, what has to be shown in libel/defamation cases would be just about impossible. Elements of Libel and Slander - FindLaw

    1. First, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant made a false and defamatory statement concerning the plaintiff.
    2. Second, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant made an unprivileged publication to a third party.
    3. Third, the plaintiff must prove that the publisher acted at least negligently in publishing the communication.
    4. Fourth, in some cases, the plaintiff must prove special damages.

The third one is where the case would fail.

I cannot see the suit as being winnable. Libel is pretty hard to prove.
In American courts, I don't know French law, but England is very easy to win libel relatively speaking. So France could sue against affiliates in France or England in a friendly venue....

Re: Paris mayor: We intend to sue Fox News

Fox News is available in France thru two cable providers: "free.fr" and "orange.fr", so one might assume any lawsuit would be in a French court.

CNN Analyst Advises Fox: Make Paris Lawsuit 'Go Away' Fast, France 'Criminalized' Slander | Crooks and Liars

Two CNN legal analysts said on Tuesday that the city of Paris could win a lawsuit against Fox News because French law was less tolerant of slander and defamation than United States law.

"Under U.S. law, I would say there is no chance of bringing a defamation case against the Fox network," CNN legal analyst Paul Callan explained. "Under French law, however, if they can get jurisdiction over Fox, there's a law from 1881 -- believe it or not -- that says if you insult the honor of a French body or person, you can sue for defamation. So under the 1881 French law, they might have a case against the Fox network in France."

"If you want to defend a defamation lawsuit, it's pricey, it's costly, a lot of times you want those things to go away," (Legal analyst Danny) Cevallos said. "People may be surprised to learn that the French, in fact, do not take such a liberal view of the First Amendment as do we. Of course, they don't have a First Amendment, but they have laws criminalizing defamation. Whereas here in the United States, defamation is merely a civil action."
“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”

I think fox news may have misspoke here and clearly some boneheaded decisions were made...but that is the extent of it, nothing more, nothing to see here
