Duke Cancels Muslim Call to Prayer; Cites Opposition, Safety.....

Uh oh.....at Duke? Think this will cause a stir? What say ye?

Before it unraveled, a plan to use Duke University's chapel tower in a call to prayer for the school's Muslim community was meant to promote religious unity and pluralism.

But after a flurry of objections arrived by phone and email along with reported security concerns Duke canceled a plan to have members of the Muslim Students Association read a moderately amplified call to prayer from the tower for about three minutes each Friday. The private university in Durham, northwest of Raleigh, was founded by Methodists and Quakers and its divinity school has historically been connected to the United Methodist Church. The school's insignia features the Christian cross and a Latin motto translated as "learning and faith.".....snip~

I think this is motivated strictly on security concerns... and must not be hyped as anti-Semitism.

Great call on their part to cancel. Next thing you know, it's like being in Iraq. Loud speakers everywhere with the "allah" cult words spewing out of the speakers.

Good job Duke. You did in fact make the right call. Safety and security prevailed.

Good. Come to our country and assimilate. Practice your religion in your home if it is at some odds with what school you are going to.

The School Administration didn't say if they had received any threats. Or at least at that time. I wonder when the security became a concern.

You'd really Have to "hype" it to call it "anti-semitism" since that term applies strictly to Prejudice against/hatred for Jews, Not Arabs and certainly not Muslims in general.

I thought they just decided not to use the chapel tower, not ban the call altogether.

Mornin Luther. That's the way ABC is reporting it with the AP. Same with many others.

As their not.....nor have they not had a call to prayer. As it was always held in the Basement of the Chapel.

Instead, Muslims will gather for their call to prayer in a grassy area near the 210-foot gothic tower before heading into a room in the chapel for their weekly prayer service. Michael Schoenfeld, Duke's vice president for public affairs and government relations, said it would be up to the students if they want to use some sort of amplification.

The original plan drew the ire of evangelist Franklin Graham, who urged Duke alumni to withhold support because of violence against Christians he attributed to Muslims. Schoenfeld said emails and calls came from alumni and others in the community......snip~

Good move by Duke. Why it was even contemplated is beyond me.

Allowing one religion such a premiment status (were calls announcing the start of the Jewish sabbath also going to be broadcast? What about Hindu calls- providing there are such things) is clearly not uhmm..... "inclusive". Rather, it is divisive. The fact that moslems were granted not only the ability to make such amplified calls, but were going to be allowed to do it from a Christian chapel is doubly insulting.

I do think the Muslims deserve credit for being assertive though.

Probably a wise move to remove it on Duke's part....The PR damage alone would cost donors to the school.
