    Yes, property rights is largely the reason why North American did so well and Central and South America did so poorly by comparison. This was covered in an excellent series by Niall Ferguson called "Civilization". Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson | PBS

    They certainly seemed to like the idea! A great deal better than what they had at home and appeared to work out well for most everyone.

    In fact it did work out well for them. They got land, 50 acres minimum, and opportunities, that would have not been available to them in Britain.
