Since we are into an election year, or leading up to it, I bet we see many more threads like this.

Another point is that if we raise the arbitrary poverty line to $100,000 per year, there will be many more children living below it.

Poor people in other lands who have been abused by American foreign policy understand this best, the USA is the USA, it's not something to argue with.

Re: Most of America’s rich think the poor have it easy

My general impression after being a social worker for the better part of a decade was that many poor didn't believe they were living the dream, but their perception of how things work and how you become successful was profoundly broken. In the end, they saw "success" and "food" exactly the same way, and had grown to depend on the Government for both in the same way. The problem was that "success" was not obtainable through the government (even though so many on the left liked to say it was), so they sat waiting for the government to deliver success to them the same way they got their welfare checks. They weren't happy about this, indeed most were profoundly depressed and disappointed that the government hadn't handed them gainful employment yet, which only fed their desperation.

Those who saw government help as temporary and regrettable were the same ones who dropped off the roles fairly quickly.

You learned quick in that job who was going to use welfare as a safety net and those who used it as a hammock.

your graph in no way disputes what I said. and it doesn't delineate the top one percent but rather than each quintile
I found your statement was one sided and didn't acknowledge that the rich give less as a percentage of their income than the other income levels.

Which of those households is more greatly impacted by that charitable giving? The one that lives below the poverty level or the one that's comfortably middle class?

Kinda explains why one guy is rich, and the other guy is poor. People don't get rich by being foolish with thier money. If I was only making 10k, I'd probably not be giving any of it away, especially because I'm probably taking handouts.

Or because the poor live close enough to poverty to actually recognize how difficult it can be to overcome rather than simply blaming the victims.

when i was an E3 with 3 kids, my wife would berate me for walking by a panhandler and not giving them anything

we would argue about this endlessly....one of many that eventually led to a divorce

my argument was always that charity starts at home.....

we just couldnt afford to be generous at that point in our lives

last year, my charitable contributions will total over 40k

a lot has changed in 35 years.......

someone earning little enough to receive any type of assistance whether through food stamps, rent control, etc has no business giving to any charity

volunteer, do errands, assist in other ways.....but monetarily.....NFW
