Most legal documents carry a state seal, require a witness signature and a notary seal, which seem good enough today for affidavits, oaths, applications, deeds, and contracts.

That was already addressed - lower cost, competition and slimmer margins will lower the cost vs. government doing the same thing. Privatization does not have to benefit society - government certainly doesn't benefit society all the time or even most of the time, even though government sells itself that way.

You haven't shown any of these things would occur, particularly for something like a marriage license which only now costs less than $100 at its most expensive, despite it being run by the government, and it is less than the cost of most legal documents offered privately that do much less in most places.

Changing to privatizing something should have some shown benefit, not just be done to do it. It is stupid to do it just to do it.

Go back and read the links I've posted. I cannot say for sure that the same things would occur if, in some future, marriage licenses are privatized but as I already stated, if privatization is done properly - the outlook is promising.

I agree. Private business would not take it on if there wasn't a cost benefit analysis to go along with it.

The IRS like what? And what's "etc etc etc". :lamo Comon at least make something up that sounds plausible. Like what monies which are not in dispute? A joint bank account goes to the survivor of a marriage and is counted as income on the survivors taxes. The IRS would be involved in the survivors taxes for that year anyway so you just proved yourself FALSE. :lamo

Death certificates are issued by health practitioners such as hospital administrators. Unless the hospital is the VA or other government facility - the government isn't involved there either as hospitals by and large are privately owned and operated.

IRS is government, when my dad died and he had a pension and life insurance, GOVERNMENT made sure it was divide out properly, there were papers to sign and that was a state official. Also his death certificate was a government form. There was a TEMPORARY one in the interim but the official one arrived later and had to be sought for through the government/notary.

He worked for the government then? That would make sense. See my pension is with a private company - the government upon my death doesn't do that unless there is a dispute over the division - if there is a division. My life insurance is with a private life insurance company - the government won't get involved in that either unless there is a dispute. You need to realize that just because your situation had the government involved does NOT mean that government is always involved or that government SHOULD always be involved. Get it?

yeah, we did that too. 13 yrs.

And had none of the privileges and legal protections and tax implications that the govt accords those legally married. Was quite happy with it actually altho if we had been able to afford buying a house, we would have married because it was much easier and financially beneficial.

It was also great when we split up! Simple.

But that's the point people here are trying to make too. You can live with someone, even call yourselves married (we didnt) but then you dont get what legal marriage offers by govt recognition and that does flow down into a million daily things. Some good, some not. I never missed not making it official.

But gays want and IMO Constitutionally deserve legal marriage. They want that 'stuff' protected by and provided by that contract...let 'em.
