Pit bull shot by Lee County deputy

If a police officer shoots a person, it's justifiable, see Ferguson Missouri and Milwaukee Wisconsin cases. A grand jury will indict a ham sandwich, but not a police officer.
Not true...there is a thread right now about cops going to trial over fear of PR optics from the mob of cop haters.

Dunno about this case but it does seem like a huge reaction to a minor infraction... all 'fleeing is against the law' twaddle aside.

What does happen a lot is a minor offense is used to make contact with a citizen to investigate further. What we don't know is who the bike pedaler might be. Perhaps he is suspected of being a drug mule/small time D-boy. A routine traffic stop is a popular tool for LE. Not all D-boys roll in pimped out rides.

Seems to me seizing the bike would be a far easier, safer, cost effective way to deal with those who don't equipe their bikes with the proper safety gear and then run away. From bike to foot transport... living the dream.... :peace

That's her story...but it sounds to me like she went outside once and knew the police were in the area when she was told to get back in the house. Knowing that police were searching for a fleeing criminal, she did not secure her dog. This is her own fault.

If you have someone at your house and they get injured you'll be sued. She should have taken the dog in the first time she was confronted.

As most people I am sure that she is being biased, and on top of that she wants money. But we are left with her version since the cops didnt really say much.
And yes the owners sounded like they were being stupid. They opened their door because most likely they wanted to gauck, then their dog ran outside because they were not paying attention. Listening to the audio as soon as the dog met the police dog bang they shot it. There was no attempt to separate the dogs. Just a quick pull the gun out and shoot. From when you first hear the owner and too when the dog is shot is mere seconds. The cop that shot the dog was an asshole.

I have seen a lot of dog fights that both dogs survived and no one needed surgery. Most times what sounds like a bad fight is nothing of the sorts. its just a good show of dominance. Perhaps they should have tried something instead of just shooting the damn dog at a moments notice. I know that officers are very protective of their police dogs. Hell I walked by a k9 unit once and the dog barked in the vehicle which sent the officer into a tissy fit.

I am not a cop hater, in fact I very much support law enforcement. But I call bull**** when I see it. ANd this case sounds like bull****. And a good friend of mine who is in law enforcement agrees that it was shoddy police work to say the least.

I would leave that conclusion to the internal investigation. But, I find it interesting that a self described proponent of LEO would advocate breaking off pursuit of a fleeing suspect to deal with the obstruction of the homeowners dog. In fact, the homeowner is lucky she wasn't arrested for interference with a lawful police pursuit.

This is Mainstream Media??!!

I like dogs...but one less subservient quadruped is no big deal.

Especially one that can kill children in a few seconds.

So we dispatch helicopter to apprehend people who are biking without a headlight. This is America, damn it, land of the free. If you want to peddle without a headlight, move to Europe!!!!!

Once again a progressive shows poor understanding. Biking without a light is why the officers attempted to the stop. Everything after that could fall under felony fleeing, resisting arrest, etc.

Your probably one that believes that a burglar is shot because of property.

A officer with a police dog should be fully aware of how to go about stopping a dogfight without pulling out a gun at a moments notice.
As should the pit's owner. Since the pit was let out and the cop was pursuing a suspect, it falls on the pit's owner to be ready to brake up the fight.

It has been left to internal investigation now hasnt it? This is just a debate and nothing more. FFS.

The officers were yelling at the owner to stay back then the dog ran out 3 seconds later the dog was shot. There was zero opportunity to stop the fight by the owner. Of course the idiot should have been paying attention to his damn dog, had he been then his dog wouldnt have been shot. Either way though since there wasnt a description of the suspect released it shows that the pursuit was never important enough for the k9 unit to be running around on private property in the first place.

My point is that all of this was unnecessary use of force. The officers should have drove around until the suspect was on the street somewhere, or just gave up the pursuit because it wasnt worth risking the lives of officers and their police dog over a guy that ran away because he had a bike at night with no light. I am guessing that the officers involved probably got a talking to by their chief. it should be a big embarrassment for the k9 officer that he let this situation happen. There seemed to have been plenty officers hanging around enough that one could go to the door and make sure no one comes out and that no dogs come out. They seriously need to train these officers better.

They shouldn't have let the dog out. This is what happens when you don't keep your dog under control.

No I believe that burglars are shot because of racism.
