Pit bull shot by Lee County deputy

What would be interesting to know is if the K9 dog was leashed when the pit bull attacked.

In fairness, the police helicopter is always flying around. It's not like the chopper was scrambled just for this. It was already on patrol and just respobded to a call.
So long as it wasn't busy on other matters, that makes things somewhat less insane.

Still seems like overkill though

An old story, but it still pisses me off:

"Mary Kate Hallock arrived at her Oakland hills home after running errands Tuesday and found a blue note fluttering on her front door. "Oakland police responded to your residence to investigate a burglar alarm," the handwritten note read. "While circling the rear perimeter, lab advanced on officers in a threatening manner before being shot and killed." "Lab" was Gloria, an 11-year-old, arthritic yellow Labrador Hallock's family had owned since she was a puppy. Oakland police shot Gloria three times with a 40-caliber Glock handgun in the family's backyard while responding to a false burglar alarm at the property. The dog, police said, growled and barked at them. "I probably read that note 10 times," Hallock, an Oakland preschool teacher, said Thursday. "I was incredulous. Gloria's never bit anyone. She's just a gentle old dog, a classic Lab, always wagging her tail.""

Frankly I'm a bit more concerned about a helicopter and K9 unit even being involved at all in chasing down someone for not having a working bike light at night...

without the seemingly over-the-top response there, the dog encounter never would have happened.

I hope that I would have the opportunity to put that miserable cop out of his misery before his buddies put me out of mine. POS POS POS

And his family is better off without him.

I have rural, fenced, gated property. They are defending all that and it's a looooong walk to the house.
This incident happened in a city.

And it doesnt have to be rural or large property. Dogs defend their yards. That's their job, their territory. It's bred into them.
That's no excuse. Keep your dog under control or its going to die and you're getting sued.

A helicopter isn't a kind of force, it's just a camera, a spotlight, and a guy on the radio. I don't see how it could be overkill. Have you never lived in a city? News and police helicopters flying around waiting for something to happen is as common as a car on the road.

Cops respond to runners this way because the vast majority of people who run have active warrants out on them.

The only good Pitbull is a dead Pitbull.

The only good Pitbull owner is the one who shoots his Pitbull.

Just my opinion, of course.

Actually, I HAVE never lived in a city.

Actually, I HAVE never lived in a city.
Helicopters constantly overhead watching everything is as normal as rush-hour traffic, street performers and hobos asking for money.

All of that for just riding a bicycle without a light, and the "suspect" is still on the run.

He's probably made it to Alabama by now.

Too many resources spent on stupidity.

People in cities have yards. Yards where their dogs are allowed to roam unattended.

And most people's dogs are not guard dogs. They wont attack. And those that do have guard dogs will have signs. Most people that dont want to get sued have their yards posted.

My dogs are 'under control' on my fenced property. I will sue the **** out of any department that shoots my dogs...if I survive. Because I will fire on anyone that draws on my dogs. I'm not kidding, they dont deserve to die because of police incompetence and I dont break the law. So they have no right to be on my property except by accident (still no right) or controlling *themselves* if they need to knock on my door for information.

Cops cant just shoot people's dogs in their yards for convenience and they dont. Otherwise you'd hear about it. (And cops in rural areas at least arent that stupid...they know everyone out here has guns.)

Pursuing a criminal does give police the right to be on your property even with your expressed prohibition.

The discussion was broader than that, you made it broader. No one can 'control their dogs' when some criminal runs int their yard and they arent aware. This bicycle incident is actually the best proof. I hope these cops get fired. I doubt they will but I hope the family sues the **** out of the department.

And still, if they shoot my dogs, I will sue the **** out of the department. I may or may not win but they will be lucky if they dont get shot. (And so will I).

Then 'no one' should own a dog.

Must have been this guy, or his relative....

An incredibly ignorant opinion, but an opinion. I have petted hundreds of pitbulls that I didn't know. Not a single one has snapped at me. Many small poodle type dogs have snapped at me.

If your dogs are "defending" you when you aren't being attacked then you're a ****ty owner and shouldn't have dogs in the first place.

Many facilities have guard dogs to secure the property. Many people expect their personal dog to to secure them against an uninvited stranger invading their fenced property. The police had no legitimate need to trespass on that property, they should have gotten the owner's permission and he could have secured the dog. If they were chasing a known violent offender it might have been legitimate, but it wasn't in this case. There were a dozen different ways the dog's death could have been avoided without endangering public safety if better procedures were used. It sounds like these Keystone cops were bored and looking for an adventure.

My god! Is he ok?

The hate for cops runs strong in this thread....

Just the stupid ones that kills people's beloved pets to give a bicyclist a traffic citation.

Overkill and a complete waste of resources comes to mind.
Next- What in Gods name possessed them to go after this fella like it was a murder case and civilization would fall.
Great judgment?

Did they do a fly by with a mini-gun?

How do you know that? It isn't in the article. Source?

Unfortunately, cops do it with some regularity. (google cop kills dog) It most cases the fools could have called the owner or Animal Control officers to handle the dog.
