Overkill and a complete waste of resources comes to mind.
Next- What in Gods name possessed them to go after this fella like it was a murder case and civilization would fall.
Great judgment?

A simple traffic stop involving a bicycle in Lehigh Acres led to a Lee County deputy firing off a shot to protect one of his own.

It happened near Gilbert Avenue just west of Gunnery Road.

Deputies tell us they attempted to stop a suspect on a bicycle outside of the Dollar General store on Gunnery Road for riding without a light. That's when the suspect ran away from deputies.

A helicopter and K9 unit were called in to help search for the suspect. While tracking the suspect in a wooded area, a K9 unit was attacked by an unleashed Pit bull. That's when a deputy in pursuit shot the Pit bull.
This is a parody story right? Helicopter, K9 squad, and a chase? It's time to cut some budgets from that local police force.

We spoke to the Pit bull's owner, Michael Rivera. Rivers says the entire incident happened on his property -- which he says has an invisible fence system.

The Pit bull is receiving treatment from animal control. River tells us his dog isn't doing well. The K9 is expected to be okay.

The suspect is still on the run. No description has been given to us at this time.

so he owns the dollar general and/or the road?

So we dispatch helicopter to apprehend people who are biking without a headlight. This is America, damn it, land of the free. If you want to peddle without a headlight, move to Europe!!!!!

The dog was shot on his own property - the dog owner could care less about someone fleeing a bicycle citation. Dogs will instinctively protect their territory, especially from other dogs; the K9 likely did not identify itself as a LEO and was attacked for cause. Blaming the dog, or its owner, is not likely - you enter private property uninvited at your own risk.

You mistake my contempt for shoddy journalism.......

News dependent upon certain factors deems if it is given lots of space of not.
Shoddy journalism?
What about overkill by the deities?

How is it shoddy journalism to include a direct quote? The dog's owner was correct - his dog never left his property yet was shot. Neither the dog nor its owner was suspected of any crime or involved in the preceding bicycle incident in any way.

My reading of "entire incident" includes events that happened outside his property.
As in; if the cops didn't pull the kid over to begin with.....

The journalist may have known of the preceding events but I seriously doubt if the dog or its owner did. How, exactly, was the dog or its owner to know that police (with a loose dog) would be visiting their property that night? The need for hot pursuit complete with air support and an attack dog are not usual for fleeing a minor traffic violation. The sane police response would have been to impound the (likely stolen?) abandoned bicycle and to forget the (barely?) criminal activity of peddling a bicycle without proper lighting.

Why didn't the governor just call out the National Guard? Or at least bring in the FBI.

If I'm recalling rightly, Military Drones are now able to be used in the United States.

I completely agree with you but a person that attacks a cop in pursuit or even in their yard will go to jail...or be shot.

Not many owners can probably even get to their dogs (if the owner is inside) before it's shot.

The whole thing is BS and cops need to be more accountable for this. It takes alot of time and effort to train dogs to protect your property, not to mention that they are often like family members to people.

Was the pit bull black, young and unarmed. If so that would explain the police overreaction.

The hate for cops runs strong in this thread....

I have realistic, IMO, worries about cops coming to my property for unfounded reasons and shooting my dogs that are here to defend me. I'll probably die too because I will fire to save them.

Because I know that I will not be a legitimate focus of police invading my property, I dont commit crimes.

Shoot first, ask questions later huh? Yep, the wild wild west still lives!

In fairness, the police helicopter is always flying around. It's not like the chopper was scrambled just for this. It was already on patrol and just respobded to a call.

If your dogs are "defending" you when you aren't being attacked then you're a ****ty owner and shouldn't have dogs in the first place.

That's true but only under strict rules to protect everyone's rights. For example, for every cis white drone there has to be a transginger drone and a black or very dark brown drone, and at least one drone has to have a vagina or the department gets sued. If a drone who sexualy identifies at steem-train flies in your airspace then you have to make the motion with your arm and go "choo-choo" or you're a racist/bigot/homophobe.

I have rural, fenced, gated property. They are defending all that and it's a looooong walk to the house.

And it doesnt have to be rural or large property. Dogs defend their yards. That's their job, their territory. It's bred into them.
