"Oakland police responded to your residence to investigate a burglar alarm," the handwritten note read. "While circling the rear perimeter, lab advanced on officers in a threatening manner before being shot and killed." "Lab" was Gloria, an 11-year-old, arthritic yellow Labrador Hallock's family had owned since she was a puppy. Oakland police shot Gloria three times with a 40-caliber Glock handgun in the family's backyard while responding to a false burglar alarm at the property. The dog, police said, growled and barked at them. "I probably read that note 10 times," Hallock, an Oakland preschool teacher, said Thursday. "I was incredulous. Gloria's never bit anyone. She's just a gentle old dog, a classic Lab, always wagging her tail.""

I hope that I would have the opportunity to put that miserable cop out of his misery before his buddies put me out of mine. POS POS POS

And his family is better off without him.

This incident happened in a city.

That's no excuse. Keep your dog under control or its going to die and you're getting sued.

    Still seems like overkill though
A helicopter isn't a kind of force, it's just a camera, a spotlight, and a guy on the radio. I don't see how it could be overkill. Have you never lived in a city? News and police helicopters flying around waiting for something to happen is as common as a car on the road.

without the seemingly over-the-top response there, the dog encounter never would have happened.
Cops respond to runners this way because the vast majority of people who run have active warrants out on them.

The only good Pitbull is a dead Pitbull.

The only good Pitbull owner is the one who shoots his Pitbull.

    Just my opinion, of course.

Actually, I HAVE never lived in a city.

Helicopters constantly overhead watching everything is as normal as rush-hour traffic, street performers and hobos asking for money.

All of that for just riding a bicycle without a light, and the "suspect" is still on the run.

He's probably made it to Alabama by now.

Too many resources spent on stupidity.

People in cities have yards. Yards where their dogs are allowed to roam unattended.

And most people's dogs are not guard dogs. They wont attack. And those that do have guard dogs will have signs. Most people that dont want to get sued have their yards posted.

My dogs are 'under control' on my fenced property. I will sue the **** out of any department that shoots my dogs...if I survive. Because I will fire on anyone that draws on my dogs. I'm not kidding, they dont deserve to die because of police incompetence and I dont break the law. So they have no right to be on my property except by accident (still no right) or controlling *themselves* if they need to knock on my door for information.

Cops cant just shoot people's dogs in their yards for convenience and they dont. Otherwise you'd hear about it. (And cops in rural areas at least arent that stupid...they know everyone out here has guns.)

Pursuing a criminal does give police the right to be on your property even with your expressed prohibition.
