Well of course he should have done something different otherwise his dog would not have ran out the door to play with the police dog and got shot. But officers should know that the general public are a bunch of morons. And should have taken the moron factor in account. It is the responsibility of the canine unit to assess a situation and stop things like morons who let their dog run out the door.

Yup, and when it does you don't have any more time to 'notify' people than the cop did before the perp ran. **** happens, and now that you know **** happens, try to anticipate what **** is more likely to happen to you, like your dog getting out, and take steps to prevent it.

Seems simple to me, if you dont want a police dog to get in a fight with a dog on private property then do your job what you were trained to do in such situations. Dont go ape **** and shoot a dog to break up a dogfight. The homeowner was stupid and that can be expected, but the officer has no excuse. Which is my point, that the police are required to be on top of things. These guys simply were not on top of things. They let a suspect get away because they didnt anticipate what could go wrong. They same scenario could have happened with a stray dog or loose dog. And everyone knows that there are a lot of strays or loose dogs out there. I am pretty sure that proper procedure isnt to just shoot any dog that get near the police dog.

    If.

But police dogs are looking for a fight. That's what they're for. That's why they're used. To fight and to win, even if it's handler has to shoot it's opponant.

I like that you mention streys because a local snake and feral dog problem is why I began carrying a gun.

I've been looking into falconry recently, I wonder if raptors can be trained to go after strays.

They did...You just seem to not like their decision.

Either way though since there wasnt a description of the suspect released it shows that the pursuit was never important enough for the k9 unit to be running around on private property in the first place.

My point is that all of this was unnecessary use of force. The officers should have drove around until the suspect was on the street somewhere, or just gave up the pursuit because it wasnt worth risking the lives of officers and their police dog over a guy that ran away because he had a bike at night with no light. I am guessing that the officers involved probably got a talking to by their chief. it should be a big embarrassment for the k9 officer that he let this situation happen. There seemed to have been plenty officers hanging around enough that one could go to the door and make sure no one comes out and that no dogs come out. They seriously need to train these officers better.
That private property was right next to the place where the suspect was stopped, in fact where he ran toward.

Yes and so while they were waiting for the k9 unit to show up they could have informed the homeowners not to come outside or let any pets outside.

Their decision was incompetent since it was the main factor in their botched search for the suspect that caused their failure.
