Your pet has a lot of value...to you. Your pet has little value to most everyone else. If you value your pet then keep them from attacking anyone you don't spicificaly order attacked.

It was a stupid and terrible decision that will cost the town money settling the lawsuit and increases hostility towards the police.

This incident may be a symptom of the increased militarization of the police that the federal government encourages with grants and gifts of surplus military equipment. Those policies encourage the local Barney Fife's to go commando and pull out all the stops and endanger the public to chase a bicyclist that ran a stop sign.
That's one of the most profoundly ignorant posts I've read in a while. You actually believe someone running from the cops is going to stop and let the cops call literaly every house he may possibly run to. It boggles the mind.

Well, hell let's just bring in Sharia law and jail the dog owner too.

Absolutely. We have a dog, and a cat and they are part of the family. However, we are talking about police pursuing someone who ran over a traffic violation. A pretty good indication that there was something more than that violation he was fleeing. Police have a duty to pursue. If it were my yard, or my dog that got put down in that pursuit, I would be devastated, but I would also understand that Police have a duty to go after the dirtbag that ran from them, and if my dog went after the cop, I would understand that he was protecting himself.

What you are advocating is a world where all one has to do is run, and they get away...I want police to catch criminals, and get them off the streets, NOT let them go.

Wrong, that is NOT what we pay police to do. As a home owner, and a tax paying citizen, we want police to catch the guy. Your own speculation aside, you have NO idea if he was a danger to the public or not. That is a fact.

No, my position is they should not have escalated the search for the bicyclist to include helicopters and dogs when they had no reason to think that the bicyclist was dangerous. Most police departments would not have taken the actions they did in this situation because they have much more important work to do.

    Just my opinion, of course.
I have a German Shepherd/pitbull mix, he looks bad ass. He isnt badass, but I can leave my house unlocked with things in the yard and its all there when I get home. People like you are the ones that make certain people afraid of my dog for no good reason. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for providing (at least in a small way) to the safety of my home. THANK YOU!

I don't mean to make anyone afraid of any breed of dog. I'm not afraid of Pitbulls. I am only of the opinion that a Pitbull is not a good breed of dog. It's been bred for only one purpose: To kill. That is a very dangerous animal to have in your life.

Now mix breeds are another matter. The ingrained characteristics of a Pitbull can be modified by the characteristics of another breed...such as with your dog.

Running is reason to believe the person is dangerous. The only people who run from cops are people with active warrants.

And using a helicopter and K9 isn't escalation anyway.

I don't believe you have the knowledge to make this declarative statement...I'd like to see you back this up, as in posting all police departments in the United States and jurisdictions in such, procedures for cases of fleeing apprehensions...I think you'll find in short order, that you couldn't be MORE wrong.
