BO is sending down a Delegation in January. How do you think this will affect BO's attempts to normalize relations with Cuba? What does it say with Cuba doing this Right after BO was taking credit for opening up talks with Cuba? Will this delegation be able to go for BO, with this happening? What say ye?




The United States on Wednesday condemned what it called Cuba's practice of repression following the detention of several activists, in the first major test of President Barack Obama's policy shift toward normalizing relations with the communist-ruled island. The arrests marked the most significant crackdown on the opposition since Cuba and the United States agreed on Dec. 17 to restore diplomatic ties and put behind them more than five decades of hostility.

The State Department said it was deeply concerned by the detention on Tuesday of several "peaceful civil society members and activists" by the Cuban authorities."We strongly condemn the Cuban government's continued harassment and repeated use of arbitrary detention, at times with violence, to silence critics, disrupt peaceful assembly and freedom expression, and intimidate citizens," the State Department said in a statement. "We urge the government of Cuba to end its practice of repressing these and other internationally protected freedoms and to respect the universal human rights of Cuban citizens," it added.....snip~

It appears to me the the perception management arm of the CIA is working hard to generate negative Cuban publicity. I read the Reuters article and thought that these "protestors" were treated better than "Occupy" protestors in the USA. From the Reuters article: "The event flopped, with only 15 participants, surrounded by a phalanx of reporters. A parallel event in Miami called by Cuban exiles drew 50 people.

Cuba had called the open microphone event a "political provocation," and it was unclear how long the dissidents would be held. Cuba typically holds dissidents for several hours and releases them."
I'm all in for the new Cuba policy, but I'm on the side of the Cubans, not the Corporatists. It doesn't require a rocket scientist to know Cuba must avoid Banking entanglements with the USA and Corporate development deals with USA TransNational elites. I seriously worry about the Cuban healthcare system because Cuba trains huge numbers of Doctors and USA HMOs must already be drooling about their potential source of cheap labor, don't ya' know. As far as the delegation going to Cuba, the Cubans must already know that it will consist of mainly CIA assets, agents, and provocatuers to lay the groundwork for NGOs, protest groups, color revolution flag manufacturers and NSA data collection specialists. Also, a few of the "Too big to fail" banker's reps with suitcases full of cash. Is that politics or fomenting revolution? Good thing Cuba's oil discoveries are not developed or we'd have to give them the Libya Freedom treatment. Seems to be working in Libya, or not?

Mornin' DF :2wave: There were more detained and placed under house arrest. Even the Democrat Menendez is asking how can BO engage.



Cuban police detained at least four political opponents on Tuesday, including the husband of prominent blogger Yoani Sanchez, hours before a performance artist planned to stage an unauthorized open microphone event, dissidents said. Sanchez said on Twitter that police detained her husband Reinaldo Escobar and dissident leader Eliecer Avila outside her home in Havana, taking them away handcuffed in a patrol car.

Escobar is editor-in-chief of the dissident news and opinion website 14ymedio.com and Avila is the leader of the opposition group Somos Mas (We Are More). The leader of the dissident group Ladies in White said some of their activists also had police stationed outside their homes, that another was detained, and another detained and released. "Given that political arrests continue and that Yoani Sanchez just tweeted that her husband was arrested this morning, how will the Obama administration engage on these issues?" Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who supports a hard line against Havana, said in a statement on Tuesday.....snip~

"House Arrest?" Hot damn y'all, ah swar. I think they should have asked BO if they could use Rikers Island or Guantanamo to be sure "justice," as in "Liberty and Justice for all," is served. Just a thought for comparison's benefit. Wowser, house arrest, those Cubans is nasty, don't ya' know?

Could be something simple like.....like, no more room in their over-crowded prisons, huh?

With the small exception that it is the USA that has more people in prison per capita than any Nation in the World. I think the last I read was almost 3% of the population. Corporate prisons always made a deal that the States or Fed jurisdiction that they are in must guarantee 90% occupancy. Think about that. Cuba partially cured their prison and institutional over population back during Jimmah Cahter's (one of my heroes) administration. Castro let out the prisoners and mental inmates and provided rafts and boats for the Mariel boatlift to Florida. He did this on the sly, pretty clever. Suddenly, hundreds of refugees on the Florida coasts and everybody talking how bad things are in Cuba for all these people to be leaving. They were crooks, nuts and assorted scumbags and we welcomed them like starving peasants. Cured Cuba's prison and asylum problems. Wowser, that Fidel must be givin' ol' Putin lessons, don't you think?

Here is the problem with that.....Castro has been filling it back up ever since. Hence Bilbo Clinton signing on back in 96 I think it was.

Like you state. They don't have to many Prisons.
 
Cuba is what it is. We aren't going to change that. We are Cuba's enemy. Only the Cuban people can change that.
 
The people of Cuba will only suffer more now, thanks to the increased power and legitimacy bestowed upon Cuba by our chump POTUS.
And what will the people of Cuba and the US get in return? Nothing.
