Re: Scalise Allegedly Spoke with White Supremacy Group

Why is it a surprise that a White Republican congressman from Louisiana sometime in the past spoke to a white supremacist group?

Do you realize how much it costs the taxpayers to fund a paid Federal holiday. Think of all of the Federal workers and the lost productivity that a holiday brings.

Many who voted against the MLK day did it for economic reasons not because MLK was black.
The greater good and what's right outweighs any economic excuses. This is just one more clear-cut example of Republicans being out of touch in regards to racial divisions.
Another is In 2002, Trent Lott’s praise for Strom Thurmond’s 1948 segregationist platform costing him his role as Senate Majority Leader. The Republican Party is nothing but angry out of touch white guys.

Out of touch I'll give you, but I'm not so sure angry or white applies...or at least not entirely.

Sure are way too many out of touch idiots in both parties though.

Does that include Christmas and Jesus? Come on man, Dr. Martin Luther King was civil rights leader and a national hero. If anyone should be honored with a national holiday, it's him.

Just reacting to the invocation of journalists' ethics. I've seen them lie on three continents.

Why you expanding the topic and trying to derail to make it about Republicans? " The Republican Party is nothing but angry out of touch white guys." Are the republicans who voted for the MLK Holiday angry out of touch white guys?

But since you opened the box, explain this one to me "A Mississippi Democratic Congressman says Clarence Thomas is an “Uncle Tom,” Mitch McConnell is a “racist,” and that Republicans are only anti-big government and anti-Obamacare because President Obama is black. Rep. Bennie Thompson made the comments over the weekend while appearing on a New Nation of Islam radio program. http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczyn...ut#.pjq9RnOrvn

    Back to the OP.

The OP was about Scalise and his presentation 12 years ago. What evidence other than the MLK vote, do you have that he is a racist. Explain why the 12 year old presentation is relevant.

In closing what Democrat who served many years in Congress was a member of the KKK? I know, do you?

Well now that's the rub. MLK Day has always seemed to me to be a gesture of atonement for the wrong done to African Americans, with MLK the vehicle. As an individual I'm not sure he deserves to be elevated above some others like Frederick Douglass or even W.E.B. DuBois. I'd rather go straight to the issue and have an Abolition Day or Freedom Day or Equal Rights Day.

    Agreed.

Christmas isn't so much about "it's some famous guy from centuries ago birthday" these days...more of a commerce-generating day - what with all the gifts and ****.
