I'm hoping Obama has the good sense to not use 2015 as a hard date for complete exit. I'm hoping the ANSF continues to fight and we continue tohelp as long as they do.

The war is vastly unpopular ( hell -I hate it too), but the region has to be pacified, now that the Taliban are not just local but international presence.
So what ever Obama says now for politics/domestic consumption we have to hope his JCS/advisors can talk some sense into him like they did on the continued air support they did for this phase

Mornin' AT. :2wave: I thought he has his SOFA in place? With who he is releasing from the Taliban. I don't think things will be improving any.

last I read was the US's BSA finally signed, and I guess the NATO SOFA also. But since Karzai is out and Ghani a much more reasonable player..there could be some room there if things don't just deteriorate.
I do agree emptying Gitmo at any cost, as well as that trade for Bergdahl is likely to have blowback.

Bunch of hard core Yemeni AQAP types were also let go, or on their way out, which has got to be bad news.

Well, I am not fond of supporting the long term financial sustainment of the Afghan Security Forces. Tell the Afghans to get up and do some work and pay for their own ****.

they can't afford to pay police ( 3000 police alone killed this year)
and "long term security forces" according to the article -so what else to do?
If they are willing to fight for their freedom/country - i'm willing to pay on an international basis - a lot of contributions don't just come from the US.
We got bases, and money commitments worldwide so this isn't new.

So long as we have troops anywhere in the middle east, our part of the war will never be over. Islamic fascists want to fight over their desert, maybe its time to let them go at it. We are mostly self sufficient in terms of oil, and they arent that great of consumers. So we're running out of reasons to have any interest there that cant be handled through the UN. Its time to try non-intervention.

I would tell them.....create some jobs. Boost a lil economic activity, and then hire some more police. Forget about trying to catch up with the tech for now. Start with the basics.

I think they have an extractive economy - lots of natural resources,not much else.
China has some contracts for the lithium, but with oil prices being where they are..
I'm thinking baby steps here, get rid of the corruption that existed under Karzai, see how it goes

Sometimes, one must admit that a situtation is hopeless and that a ground up (top down?) rebuild is required. A "nation" that has never had a functional central government, has a 5% literacy rate and has one paved road cannot be expected to govern itself, much less, create (and control) a viable security force. In order for "democracy" to have any chance of success in a nation, it first requires a population that can make decisions without having them based, nearly entirely, upon corruption and loyalty to "tribal" leaders that maintain power by force.

Trust me. No battle buddy of mine gives Obama ANY credit for ANYTHING having to do with the war. This genius changed the rules of engagement to where we can't fire at the enemy until they have already shot at us. The "wait to get shot" rule is why no service member respects Obama.

That's just one of them.....and now that most know that the Demos and BO are the ones that wanted to drop pay, pharmacy, by 7%. Have been gutting the Military and placing our people more at risk of harm. Their hollow words of what they have to say about us who serve. Should fall on deaf ears. Anytime they show up and try to demonstrate that they care.

Well said. I don't know a single soldier, at least in my company/bat that actually thinks Obama is a good Commander in Chief. Heck, over 70% of the casualties in Afg since 2001 happened under Obama since he changed the rules of engagement. He's a cancer.

Yeah BO peep can't handle violence nor violent speech.....I know all about him before he became somebody. This reflects in all he does. Even with a war and or conflict.

And that requires generational evolution which we see no evidence of occurring. Afghanistan is the same way its been for hundreds of years. Until they decide to change internally there nothing we can do for them. So all we can do is drop in from time to time and kill some terrorists.
