Walmart customers “unruly” after store closes, police called

Define thuggish behavior. Why can't something be "rampant consumerism" and thuggish behavior?

It's the difference between looking at this single situation in a vacuum and looking at what it means from a societal standpoint. He's looking at the single situation, only.

People think the protests and police reaction towards this recent crop of protests is bad, the stuff that went on back in the 60's is down right horrendous. Think of what would be popping up on Twitter and Youtube back then if they had access to that technology.

It's hard to even imagine. Consider what DP would be like... and how many new Sub-Forums we'd have:

Civil Rights
Vietnam War
Cold War
Counterculture

And many more I'm sure.

I don't know about you all, but I have witnessed plenty of times people acting like jerks over being inconvenienced. At no time was I aware if the person was a Democrat or Republican or anything else. I've seen people meltdown over the store running out of a sale item or having to wait in line because the person in front of them was slow to unload their cart or had a lot of coupons or the cashier was new etc. I feel bad for the store employees who had to endure it all after probably killing themselves for the past several weeks during the busiest time of the year in retail. It was nice that Walmart closed early so their employees could get home to their families where many of them still had packages to wrap and prepare for their celebration today.

This is hopeless.

People wanted what they wanted when they wanted it. Wal-Mart was unable to oblige. "Thuggish behavior" ensued.

Let me guess, all liberals' fault, amirite?

Kobie, who does not want what they want when they want it? Is that a license to to whatever they want?
Try real hard here...concentrate.

Good post. I always consider this during the Christmas season when I go to any store. I worked retail when I was in college and I remember what it was like. I always try to give the employees the utmost courtesy, respect, and time to do their jobs as I aware of how busy they are.

By this logic bank robbers and muggers are just rampant consumers. :doh

If this were an IQ test, you just did really poorly. That's a huge leap in logic that doesn't even make sense. Let's try it:

Rampant consumerism can be an example of thuggishness.
All thugs are rampant consumers. T or F

Tell us the difference between a single situation and it's application to a larger societal issue.

Are you asking me if I somehow condone this kind of behavior?

Yeah, it sucked. I'm glad I have a week off now.

If George Washington had been addressed in a rude tone of voice he would have run his sword through the offender. If a shopkeeper had been addressed rudely in the 1950s the offender would have the crap beaten out of him with whatever the shopkeeper had behind the counter.

Ergo people were a lot more polite back then. We don't have nearly enough of that kind of violence now days.

George Washington would have killed someone for being rude? That's a hero to you?

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that this comes from the "I have every right to run you over if you inconvenience me" crowd.

My initial one, yes, though I think that Kobie's description of how consumerism has played a part in this also has merit and combines nicely with my assessment.

What do you think?

Wellll, personally I was hoping to listen and in general not opine; at least not until there was enough meat to stick a fork in. ( if ya' get my drift ).

I prefer to listen before I speak.

OK... that's cool.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Also, if I had to choose, I'd choose rudeness over violence any day of the week.

Well you must. See, here's the thinking - he thinks it's bad, therefore they must be a bunch of liberals (the source of all bad things). Since you are liberal, you must condone this because they have a "hive mind." (Does anyone else remember that bait thread that started as a rant about how liberals are like the Borg in Star Trek?)

Ergo, you condone it. Because Al Sharpton told you to. Or something.

Lol !!

Its " Capitalism's '' fault ...

Wow.

The reality is some people are just too immature to handle Capitalism. The dame type of " Capitalism " is being applied at the Wallmart in my city.

We don't have problems like this.

Ummm, when you create a culture that fosters a type of attitude, you get that type of attitude. ;) Or is that only true for the supposed nanny state? As I said, if you foster a selfish culture, people will act selfishly. Why anyone is shocked at that is beyond me.

Because you didn't have the internet to shed light on these types of stories back then.
The fact is, we are nicer, more civil, and a safer society than we have ever been.[
/QUOTE]

Wrong.

We are exactly the same people that we were in the past.

But now everyone has a cellphone- This permits juvenile delinquents to quickly gather in large groups (Flash mobs.) and commit crimes that wouldn't be possible for individuals.

This is silliness. What is the lefts aversion to personal responsibility?

Kudo's for working the lefts anti-consumerism canard into this. People aren't responsible for their behavior, and somehow capitalism is to blame no doubt. Its just more cultural marxism on display.

Lets try this again, can you give me an example of rampant consumerism that is thuggish? They aren't equivocal.

What does this have to do with personal responsibility? I'm not personally responsible for "unruly" WalMart customers. Nor am I personally responsible for Al Sharpton. Where does my personal responsibility even come into play here?

I wonder what the right's aversion to it is when it comes to the media. I guess only liberals have to have such things. Even so, none of this enters into the realm of things that I affect or am responsible for.

So consumerism is a good thing? There's no other meaning to Christmas, just consumer goods and pretty lights?

Sure , consumerism is great.

How is it relevant to a bunch of idiots getting out of hand because a Wallmart shut down early ?

Unless you're trying to suggest that Consumerism is new and is the reason why these people couldn't control themselves why bring it up ?
