So, how about it? Are we becoming more selfish? Is this lashing out like depicted in the story a result of people feeling like they are being too tightly controlled? What say you?
Too tightly controlled? In a world where you can do nearly anything? Well, that's silliness.

But what has changed is the consequence of growing materialism. Things matter more than people, and we've lost any sense of community. We've isolated ourselves from others. Taken our myths (like rugged individualism) to heart and forgotten they were myths. As humans, we need community. And an internet community doesn't fit the bill.

Now that's not all of it, but it's a huge part of our problems.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

If George Washington had been addressed in a rude tone of voice he would have run his sword through the offender. If a shopkeeper had been addressed rudely in the 1950s the offender would have the crap beaten out of him with whatever the shopkeeper had behind the counter.

Ergo people were a lot more polite back then. We don't have nearly enough of that kind of violence now days.

Capitalism is an ideology that promotes being selfish. Why you'd be surprised that people would act selfishly is beyond me.

I was just driving in Ohio and saw police outside of a Walmart... lol.

I was not in the area this happened though, so I am guessing it's high alert at many Walmarts today.

At one time people cared about a genteel (sic) behavior, but not anymore. we are rude and crude and revel in that hedionism
Maybe some people can't function without the psychological safety net of knowing Walmart is open in case they need something. Not all countries have the 24/7 business hours America has. It is very convenient being able to go get medication or anything, any time of the day in the states. I miss it when I leave the country.

I would usually write off a statement like this as hackery, but really, the Ayn Rand philosophy teaches the literal "virtue of selfishness." Liberalism is a collectivist philosophy, whereas modern conservatives favor individualism over the collective.

I would argue self importance falls under individualism, not collectivism. No responsibility to anybody but yourself is not collectivism, but more of an individualist mindset.

I am not going to argue these people are liberal or conservative. I am just pointing out the flaws in your post.

We've got a ways to go yet, but we are running headlong towards being like the people of the earth in Noah's day.

We didn't have 24 hours Wal Marts in the 60's. We didn't have as many people as we do now either. Look at the studies of mice behavior in overcrowded living conditions.

Too many people and the loss of manners. Just look at this forum of all the people who feel they are entitled to swear in public forums even though against the rules. Yes , there is the weak censorship of crossing out a few letters but the word is visible to anyone with an IQ over 60.
