Most Jewish holidays do. A lot of them are pretty dour and even the ones that aren't (like Sukkot or Purim) are actually kind of silly. They don't translate into any kind of modern mindset well. That's one thing Christmas has going for it. A big feast with one's friends and family is pretty much always a good thing, no matter why you're doing it. That's why Christmas has such a universal appeal and why, frankly, Jesus isn't the reason even for the Christmas season. Celebration and the people we love are.

We'd celebrate Christmas unless our practicing grandmother came to visit. When she finally left...bam, Christmas time, though maybe a few days late. There was a Chanukah Harry (see avatar photo) skit in SNL roughly twenety odd years ago where he fills in for Santa and the kids are bummed by the ridiculous gifts (A dreidel, some warm socks and a pair of slacks) until Santa saves the day by getting better and everyone's happy again. That idea didn't come out of a vacuum.

    What?
Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

    It was intentional, sparky.

Uh, no. That's the popular internet meme he was referencing.

I don't see how this is more offensive than say Joe biden telling a man in a wheel chair to walk up to the stage.
