Sony Cancels Theatrical Release for ‘The Interview’ on Christmas

Yeah Hollywood is actually anti-communist...in the 1950's. :lamo

Good grief, it's almost like you just make statements out of the blue. Hollywood was heavily anti-communist right up until the late 80s. Rocky? Rambo? Red Dawn? Red Scorpion? Red Scare? Invasion USA? I could go all day with movies produced in Hollywood that were anti-communist. Communists were depicted as "the bad guy" quite regularly. Terrorists even more-so. Die Hard? Back to the Future? I think what's laughable is that you believe that one of the country's richest area code wouldn't be anti-communist. The country's wealthy (don't get it confused with rich) do not have an interest in supporting communism whether in their movies or elsewhere.

What did you take in your 8 years of public university? It seems like your electives didn't actually include anything in history. You make ridiculous statements that are so devoid of historical accuracy that it's quite easy to debunk them. Hollywood stopped portraying "communists" as the bad guys around the same time USSR fell (on paper anyways). After that, its focus became "new age" villains. Hackers, arab terrorists, serial killers, etc. This is pretty well known to anybody who has taken a class on American culture. How is it possible you don't know this?

I see, a handful of action movies where commies are the bad guys means Hollywood isn't a bunch of leftists teeming with commies and other marxist fail. Brilliant.

And I only attended public universities for 4 of my 12 years.

You have no idea what Sony corporate thinks.

All corporations think $$ and nothing else (assuming there are no activist shareholders on the board).

That phrase by Sony is a lot of garbage and caved in to blackmail. Obviously, there must be lots of info that Sony must be so very frightened about that they would rather cave in to blackmail . But there is no guarantee that these hackers will not divulge more information.

If the executives at Sony had any brains they would put the movie on DVDs and sell them at a cut rate. Are they smart to do that?

A handful? There are literally hundreds of studied cases where "communists" are the bad guys in one way or another.

These are selected filmographies of the thousands of movies which have discussed/attacked communism in Hollywood. I actually welcome you to educate yourself on the topic and watch films Goodbye Lenin (Sony, 2003). It's a pretty hilarious attack on the absurdities of communism and is a sign of how "Hollywood" produced/distributed movies) still attack communism. How is it possible that after 8 years in school you wouldn't even have come across a book on this subject?

And I only attended public universities for 4 of my 12 years.

That doesn't make your ignorance look any better.

And rather easily. We know also how the media refused to publish the Mohamed cartoons and there are probably many more now which just stay unreleased due to the inevitable messages from those who threaten the lives of those involved.

At this point it's getting ridiculous. What is going to be tragic for Sony is that a few years from now this will be seen by the entire industry as a major overreaction. You're going to see some more overreactions for a short time, but sooner or later they themselves will say "enough is enough" and not cave in any further. The pendulum will swing crazy for a while (unfortunately it has also claimed Steve Carrel's latest project), but it will correct itself.

Man, there's something about Sony and hacking of the past few years that just brings out the worst from their entire corporation. First lackluster protection of their gaming network, now we find out they had a folder called "passwords" in their movie studio! They just can't get it right.

Lets be clear here: its not Sony that gave in but the theatre owners have been refusing to put the movie up in their theatres so there wasnt much Sony could have done except go along with them.

GTFO. :lamo
That is some extraordinary spin, I have to say. Kudos.

With a nod from Sony, first.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of the National Assn. of Theatre Owners, where Sony executives told theater owners that they would be free to drop "The Interview" from their holiday schedules without breaching their contractual agreements or jeopardizing future bookings of Sony films, according to people familiar with the meeting.

I don't think you know what that word means. I didn't spin anything. I stated that Hollywood has been anti-Hollywood more often than not. If you think otherwise, I welcome you to show the evidence. Maybe some movies where communists win? ;)

I'm still upset. ApolloooooooOOO...NooooOOO!

It's pretty funny isn't it? That somebody would think 70-80s Hollywood was anything but on the attack of Communism. There are literally hundreds of cases where an American hero went up against some communist in Latin America or the Rushkies got a negative depiction on the big screen. Hell even in the 2000s, American superheroes are still fighting communists or former communists with an axe to grind.

You can't even go back and read the discussion. Bless your heart.

Actually, he's on point. It's you who has yet to demonstrate any evidence to the contrary.

Ok, let's keep going. This is all literally me just thinking off the top of my head:

Almost all of the Rambo movies (is that 3? not including first blood)
Team America
Rocky IV
What's the movie with owen wilson where he crashes his plane in Russian territory? That one.
Top Gun (migs were commie)
Die Hard (the last one was in Russia but all of them contained Eastern European guys for the most part)
(God I want to look up evil commie movies but i promised I'd do it off memory)
From Russia with Love (and I'm sure a few other Bonds as well)
Oh, there's all of the Jack Ryan styles books, let me see if I can rattle some off:
I can't but there's the one with Ben Affleck where he boards the sub and there is about to be a nuclear war with Russia
Ohhhhh, and the big one, Air Force One. A good one for Harrison Ford

Someone else hop on and think of some movies off of the top of their head to shut US Conservative up about there not being enough commie hating movies.

*Edit: And don't talk **** to me. You still haven't backed up your dumb "fascism is more liberal" statement that you know is stupid as hell.

*Edit 2: I didn't include them, but pretty much any movie that includes the Vietnam War could count technically. So that gives me Forrest Gump, Platoon, etc

Defiance wasn't anti-Soviet in the action film sense of them being the main bad guy, but it was anti-Soviet in its view of the Soviet's actual support of Jewish "comrades" in WWII.

Reds was a bit more on point with this sense of idealism v. reality, as it was more about the deflating experience for American leftist intellectuals in the early revolution.

Actually, he's on point. It's you who has yet to demonstrate any evidence to the contrary.

He seems to be more focused on the outspoken celebrities who outwardly support America's adversaries (Jane Fonda, Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, etc.) and the films that focus on American imperialist defeat like Platoon, Che, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, and so on. I think US Conservative also overlooked the rather pro-Soviet and pro-Communist sentiment in Hollywood unions through the 1950s, where (for instance) Reagan gained his fame.

So you think that a few movies somehow change the overwhelming lean and ideology of hollywood. Thats fascinating.

The thing is that those celebrities for the most part wouldn't make up even a sizeable percentage of Hollywood's production output. More importantly, they don't represent the majority of Hollywood. I agree Hollywood was probably had far more communist sympathizers in the 1950s than it did in the 1970 and 80s when big budget productions started becoming realities. Hell, I'd even argue that the original Star Wars trilogy was so popular because of how it could be applied to the situation between the USSR & US. Sure, there are a lot of visuals that lend themselves to the Empire being similar to Nazi Germany. However, much of the vocabulary used throughout the movie and the actual politics of the Empire pay homage to those of the USSR's.

Its true there were commies in hollywood in the 50's, as there are today. What was also true is there was a general anti-communist tone in both hollywood and in mainstream America. Many of those same marxists were part of the frankfurt school, and they spread in the 60's. There were still anti-communists even then. Hollywood only continued to move towards the same commie fail, even if a few movies make it superficially appear otherwise.

Rambo. :lamo

So you think that a few movies somehow change the overwhelming lean and ideology of hollywood. Thats fascinating.

I don't think you're going to get much push back on the idea that much (quarrels will exist about it being a majority or not) of Hollywood is left of center, with a disproportionate number who lean socialist and (depending on how old they are) had warm feelings for the revolution. However, I think they are also saying that at given points in Hollywood's history, there was a tendency to release a ton of films for the general population to satisfy those anti-Left wing urges. The less populist the tone, the more likely they were to tap into the idea of the Soviet vanguard, anti-colonialism, anti-US imperialism, and so forth. But those popcorn films tend to satisfy the ideas of anti-Left sentiment.

Sony gave them the choice and that was the right move since the theatre owners would have gone their own way anyway even if Sony stood firm.

Potentially so. I think, however, Sony has largely set the tone for how this was going to go. It's been a Sony-centric story.

Fair enough but to cite Rambo (an action movie that needed a villain-it would be the taliban today) as some evidence of the absence of the clear left lean is hollywood is insane, even Rambo was a classic leftist military "victim".
