Gorbachev calls for U.S.-Russia summit to defrost ties

Russia is its own problem because it produces nothing.

Vodka, caviar, and oil. That's it. Drop the oil prices, and you destroy them.

That's called poor planning, and their only response is to wage war.

Even when the USSR was at its peak, it often could not even feed itself, despite having access to some of the richest farmland on earth (much of that in the Ukraine). They were never huge producers and yet were able to go on for decades.

And then there is the fact that much of europe is still dependent to varying degrees on oil and gas from Russia (1/3 of Europe's oil/gas is imported from there). At the same time, Europe has spend much money on "green initiatives" like wind and solar instead of securing oil/gas resources, meaning Russia has them by the balls to a degree. So at least to a degree-that's not poor planning.

I don't support this along as Obama is Prez. Forget it!

I want to frame this comment for posterity's sake. This is a prime example of politics over country right here.

Gorbachev is now 82..Why does he still have an opinion..apart from both being members of the KGB..

We could call back Boris Yelstin..a chronic alcoholic who was sometime too drunk to get out of his private plane..

1991 to 1999.

For 8 years this drunken old man had access to nuclear missiles aimed at America!!

Mikhail Gorbachev was never a member of the KGB. And Boris Yeltsin is dead.

Everything up to a military presence in Ukraine (ours and other NATO members) to make it clear this aggressive behavior wont be tolerated.
Sadly, that should have been done some time ago, and we have a weak POTUS. A leader would have lead, not Obama. Putin can read him like an open book.

Is there anybody you DON'T want to go to war with? That would save us some time.

I also assume you'll be enlisting to help on the front lines of World War ****ing Three.

Therein lies the problem: Europe won't do anything. They always expect us to step up first before moving in to assist, and they use baby steps when doing THAT.

I agree, and its partially our fault. Part of the reason much of the socialist fail of europe has gone on as long as it has, as well as the inflated "success" of the EU, is because Europe hasn't really had to defend itself since WW2. Even the biggest spenders, like Germany and the UK have small but modern militaries, but its a drop in the bucket. Even when teamed up as NATO, without the US they are in big trouble. Its also not directly comparable based on spending, money goes much further in Russia (and China) then it does in the west, and Russia has the 3rd largest military in the world, arguably the second most powerful behind the US.

I never said I wanted to go to war with Russia, Kobie. Please read before you comment.

You said you wanted NATO military presence in Ukraine. What, pray tell, do you think is going to happen if that were to transpire?

Obama is a weak leader, we know it, and the world certainly knows it. Thats merely an accurate observation.

I think it will demonstrate our resolve in preventing Russian aggression. Russia understands force. Tragically it also understands that our chump leader would never use it. So until an actual leader is in the White House, nothing is going to happen. Same story with ISIS. This is what happens when people elect democrats.

Good ol Gorby. Many times the voice of reason in the international sphere. I will stand behind his statements. I do believe Russia and the US need to sit down with a broad agenda. I think it should cover everything from Ukraine, Russia roll in Eastern Europe, sanctions, economic influence, the US roll in Eastern Europe, etc.

IMO, former President Gorbachev means well. Unfortunately, the differences between Russia and the United States are so fundamental, a summit that is merely about talking probably won't accomplish much, assuming it would be held at all. That both President Putin and President Obama have all but personalized the differences has further worsened the situation. Instead, both countries would need to work in advance to create a concrete agenda for a summit that their Presidents could then agree upon so that a degree of progress is made. Progress might slow or reverse the continuing deterioration in the bilateral relationship, but the fundamental differences concerning Ukraine won't be bridged anytime soon regardless of whom leads either country.

Personally, the kind of sophisticated understanding that both countries' leaders had of the other country and the respect that they had for one another's critical interests during the closing decades of the Cold War is currently lacking for a variety of reasons. I suspect this gap has led to miscalculations that further exacerbated the situation.

Kobie, throughout history people have buried their heads in the sand and appeased dictators. In this, you share much with those who came before you. Sadly it makes things worse.

I assume, then, you will be signing up to serve in the war you desperately want, lest we be "appeasers."

Indeed. I think Putin understands Obama much more than the other way around. Its when the sunshine and rainbows of leftism comes up against tanks and jets.

I already said I dont want war, Kobie. But the reality is the reality. What you are really saying is you are willing to appease Putin by allowing him to forcibly take other nations. Can't say i'm surprised.

Not what I said at all, but please, continue telling me what I really think. I SO want to hear more.

Its not what you said, its what you support. Actions kobie, they matter-and yes, doing nothing is an action. Perhaps you too wish to relive mother Russia's glory days, eh?

Please link to the post where I said "do nothing."

It never stops with you. It really never does. You'd think I'd know better by now than expect a shred of honesty from you on any topic.

Cool story bro. Wipe those eyes and tell us what you support (besides nothing).

I am sure it has to be difficult for Gorby seeing much of his hard work being undone. I am sure Reagan would feel the same if he were alive and well.

Then he should talk to his lord and master there in Moscow, Putin, because he is putting the cold into that relation, not the USA.

If Gorby wants better relations, that is all down to the russians and nobody else.
