6 Gitmo detainees arrive in Uruguay for resettlement

Glad to see that the era of America behaving badly is winding down, albeit way too late.

After all it's so much cheaper, more civilized and socially acceptable to just blow them up with a drone strike. That way if you take out their wives, children, family & friends at the same time it's a bonus! Think of it as being merciful... when the peace President kills a bunch of them at a time then there will be fewer people left behind to feel sorry for them. Plus ---- Al Qaeda won't use that as a recruiting tool. Right? (gosh... I hope that was the right guy!?!)

Or maybe, we should just treat them like they would treat us. :doh

No, what's being claimed is that those people have a reason to be pissed, and those claiming it aren't necessarily wrong.

And my point is, simply, that civilized people who are pissed, for whatever reason, don't go on a murderous rampage to avenge their perceived wrong.

Actually, a 30% recidivism rate is about half of the one we have here in the U.S. Small sample size regarding Gitmo, but still.

America

I'm curious - do you know how much of that supposed 60% recidivism rate for US prisoners is related to non-violent drug offenses or the Eric Garner types, arrested 31 times and out on bail when he was again arrested and died in the process? In America, the ones who would cause trouble if released are never released from prison.

About damn time. Finally more and more prisoners who have not been charged with anything, and have been cleared to release have finally been released. Good move, and this facility is long overdue to be closed. Its a stain on America.

I am afraid that it is not at all as simple as you imply. I followed the release of a gitmo inmate to Germany a few years ago. Bush had offered his release to Schröder and Fischer, but they turned it down for over two years, while decrying guantanamo as inhuman. Only after after an extended period were they willing to bend to the man's lawyer's arguments.

Another issue i looked at was the repatriation program study from Saudi Arabia. A majority of the participants in the program returned to terrorist activities within two years. This was true in spite of massive financial support and an extensive reintegration program.

Keep moving them goalposts apdst, never give up! Just move on to the next red herring! Maybe if you go back far enough, you can even figure out a way to justify slavery!

However, common soldiers aren't included in that list. I was referring to POW's, not personnel tried in the Nuremburg Trials. Learn the difference, then get back with us. Thanks for playing.

Did you actually read the link? ;) I'll give you a tip, there are a few "common soldiers". Keep trying though, it's fun to see you move goal posts when you're proven wrong.

1) The people at Gitmo aren't POWs. 2) The Nuremberg Trials aren't the only ones included in that link. Did you actually read it? Cause it's sad to watch you own yourself.

Lmao, apdst, I'll give you one chance to be honest: Did you read the link and look at the people tried? ;) If you did, your entire post is wrong. Please stop this. It makes you look really bad when you try and move the goal posts, then change what your posts say. :) Here, I'll make it easy for you if you can find which crime this belongs to:

War crimes trials | After the War | The Thai–Burma Railway and Hellfire Pass

In all, Australia conducted nearly three hundred trials, in which 924 Japanese servicemen were accused of war crimes. Of these, 644 were convicted and 148 were sentenced to death, although 11 had their sentences commuted.

In cases involving mass atrocities, the defendants were accused of crimes committed against Allied civilians and POWs in five concentration camps (Dachau, Mauthausen, Buchenwald, Flossenbürg, Nordhausen) and their subcamps (such as Mühldorf), as well as at the Hadamar psychiatric hospital. In these trials, the accused held official positions in the camps and were almost all members of the Nazi Party, one of its formations such as the SS (the elite Nazi guard), the SA (Nazi Storm Troopers), or the German military. A minority were civilian employees of the Third Reich while a few were concentration camp inmates themselves who had held privileged positions such as Kapos and block elders.

Get back with us when you learn the difference between a prisoner, captured on the battlefield and a war criminal tried in a war Crimea trial. Thank you.

Apdst, are you still trying? That you failed to even read the link tells us everything we need to know about you, however, I'll humor you:

Graves Recall Executed German POWs - Los Angeles Times

On a chilly hillside near a military prison, Wally Chilcoat places red silk flowers on 14 graves, those of the only German prisoners of war executed on American soil.

All 14 German POWs had been court-martialed and found guilty of murder. On July 10, 1945, after Germany's surrender, five were hanged in an old warehouse elevator shaft at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks. They were convicted in Oklahoma for a murder at a POW camp there.

Did you actually read the link? You're looking bad.

Nobody said they did.

Interesting. The Gitmo prison was set up in 2002 and since then we've had no Al Qaeda attacks on this country. We invaded Iraq in 2002 and since then we've had no Al Qaeda attacks on this country.

Prior to 2002 we had 2 very large Al Qaeda attacks on this country, and Al Qaeda operatives spending years in this country plotting the death of Americans and destruction of our cities/buildings/infrastructure. What was the #1 recruiting tool that was used then?

causation or coincidence? Do you have any evidence that it has made a difference? I think it has more to do with Al Qaeda on the run (in particular Bin Laden) because of our incursion into Afghanistan. Moreover, the issue is not with rounding up and sidelining a few unsavory characters, it is what we did with them that I object to....

I will point out that Al Qaeda has made no attacks since the Patroits won their first Super Bowl either? causation or coincidence?

You are right about the drone strikes; you are wrong that America should play in the gutter.

How many barbary pirates were charged?

I don't know that much about the Barbary pirates. Maybe I should be outraged there as well, but it was 200+ years ago, so I forgive whoever abused their powers there.

Thank you for find equivalence. Its a shame you had to dig back 200+ years to find it.

A Progressive's analysis of historical events can be quite fascinating, if done in small doses..
