it won't solve that aspect of it. that is going to take time, and a lot of it.

Furthermore when you actually do need police it takes them forever to show up because they were too busy pulling someone over for not wearing a seat-belt or showing up with 6 officers because some dude was selling cigarettes on the streets.
Seriously that dude is soooo misguided. Police do NOT stop crime for the most part. Mostly all they do is show up and right a report or a ticket. I cant believe he honestly thinks that it would magically degrade into chaos. Cops do not stop crime. They show up after its done unless the criminal is really, really stupid. Hell wild, wild west might actually be better. Then everyone would have a personal gun and could actively stop crime. Police are becoming and entiled prestige cast of society and you could argue they are hurting cities more than helping. I would exaggerate that 99% of a cops job is collecting money for the city and less than 1% actually actively halt a crime.

Funny that he thinks a police force is the only thing keeping people from turning into roaming bands of evil marauders.

The hell it isn't about the race of the cop and the race of the perp/victim.

I've only seen East St. Louis from across the river. I see no compelling reason to visit there.

Better the police be afraid then law abiding citizens, in my book.

This is the type of response you get when you ask someone who doesn't know a ****ing thing about law enforcement except the fact that they stole his weed a few times to give an assessment of the purpose of law enforcement in an area.

Well... sorta maybe, in a general sense that gov should fear The People and not the other way around... but also not so much, because a frightened armed man is a scary thing to be around. More likely to overreact and shoot.

Maybe all these training vids they watch these days is making them overly paranoid?

True, I was erring on the side of caution.

    Its not the training vids...

Its the "scenario training". At least where I worked our scenario training, which continued after we left academy on a yearly basis, was constructed and played out in a manner in which the officer is ALWAYS going to be wrong by failing to take some safety precaution or suspect one of the role players as a threat. They have officers getting shot by soccer moms, by abused spouses, by the freaking gas station clerk who called in a robbery. Not saying these are impossible scenarios. But that type of training on a regular basis helps to keep officers in a paranoid state of mind where anyone could potentially be "the enemy".

There are those who take that **** to heart, and there were those who just shrugged it off as other fellow officers feeling the need to justify their existence at the academy full time instead of being on the street with everyone else by making impossible scenarios and then feeling entitled to give a 10 minute lecture on officer safety (paranoia).

Visiting would give a person the gist of what a community looks like after manufacturing jobs lost to foreign countries.
