Pope blasts Christian, Muslim fundamentalists while leaving Turkey

I know there are those who call themselves Christian while at the same time denying that Catholicism is also a Christian faith. I'm sure we will be hearing from some of them when the Pope's message gets out.

Pope blasts Christian, Muslim fundamentalists while leaving Turkey

Pope Francis said on Sunday that equating Islam with violence was wrong and called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help dispel the stereotype.

Francis, the leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, told reporters aboard his plane returning from a visit to Turkey that he understood why Muslims were offended by many in the West who automatically equated their religion with terrorism.

The Argentine pope, who has been trying to foster cooperation with moderate Islam in order to work for peace and protect Christians in the Middle East, said it was wrong for anyone to react to terrorism by being "enraged" against Islam.

"You just can't say that, just as you can't say that all Christians are fundamentalists. We have our share of them (fundamentalists). All religions have these little groups," he said.

“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”
~ James Madison, letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822

"Islam encourages forcible expansion" and "Islam opposes terrorism" are not incompatible statements.

Of course, while Muslims states are called to spread their religion by force, they are generally no where near as bad as liberal states.

I'm assuming this has more to do with the past couple of Popes trying to erode barriers between Christianity and Islam than it does a serious consideration of the systemic problem of terrorism within the population who subscribe to Islam.

This post fails more than anything that has failed before.

I found a nest of rattlesnakes in my back yard.

I have been trying to foster cooperation with the moderate rattlesnakes.

I have a much greater chance of success than does the pope.
