'Black Friday' shoppers clash in the U.K.

Police blasted stores for bringing "Black Friday" to Britain, with the US sales event descending into chaotic fist fights as frenzied consumers battled to grab discounted goods.

In scenes of pandemonium around the country, common civility went out the window as yelling customers punched it out in a bid to secure reduced-price televisions and coffee makers.

Looks like our customs are not spreading good cheer?

Black Friday brings out the worst in people. What's really sad about all this is that the deals often aren't all that great. They hype it up, but really if you pay attention to pre-Black Friday prices and Black Friday prices you might be surprised to find that the discounts aren't that much better than discounts you'll find any other time of the year.

It really should be called "Bait And Switch Friday."

On Black Friday, I shop from home and wait for it to come in the mail. Man, I love having CCs.

Black Friday is for idiots. No. Because I am at home. Where these idiots should be.

Heya Grip. :2wave: Well her around Chicagoland area we had fights over some Towels, phones and toys. In L.A.....they went Old school. Don't cut in line. See they don't do that here. As people have been shot for doing so.

Black Friday has infiltrated Canada, too. It's completely manufactured nonsense created by the retailers. Bad enough people feel the need to buy a bunch of crap for Xmas. You have to brave the overbusy malls in order to gift someone for $50 (cuz that was the set limit), and you either ask them what they want or you buy them something they don't. They, in turn, brave the overbusy malls in order to gift someone for $50 (cuz that was the set limit), and you either ask them what they want or you buy them something they don't. It's silly, asinine and retarded. The best thing my family did years ago was to do away with the ridiculousness. No more stress... we simply enjoy each other's company at Xmas.

Yep, some (many?) stores seem to place items on sale, like big screen TV's or power tools, that are discontinued models with small print saying limited to stock on hand, while supplies last, no rain checks or at some stores only. They count on morons so intent to purchase that kind of item that they will spend far more to get a much worse "one time deal" on a "similar" replacement item.

Nah, it brings out the worst people.

When people on the low end of the IQ spectrum get together you can always expect stuff like this happening.

I had a guy at my pharmacy who was in front of me but drifting out of line. He turns and says to me, 'was I in front of you?', like I did something wrong. I thought to myself, I don't know if he's being polite or about to go postal on me, so I quickly said 'oh no, you were here first.' It sure wasn't worth getting in a fight over, since I had nowhere to go in a hurry. I usually tell line hoppers, 'hey, the line starts behind me, not in front.' But I've rarely ever had to say it.

What you talking about.. that is your customs that is spreading... violence during Black Friday in the US is well known.

I have never wanted anything that badly..and I hope I never will...

I find the whole idea of Black Friday spreading outside the US as utterly disgusting. The UK and other countries are only doing it because Apple and Amazon started it off a few years ago and it is causing so many problems. Europe traditionally has its discount season after Christmas, starting on the 25-6th of December and retailers should either respect this, or create another "event".. importing yet another American inspired holiday/tradition that has no meaning what so ever for us.. is just pathetic.

We didn't make the Europeans lose their eggs, we just scrambled them.

Hey..it puts money in the tills..I am surprised that people are so easily duped, to the point of rolling around on the floor, screaming, and trying to snatch stuff out of other people's hands..are we savages??

Would I do it?

I don't think so..it is cheap and embarrassing...:notlook:

Today we have Small Business Saturday.....so another day to get them out spending da money!

Oh, and don't forget after Sunday. We have Cyber Monday. For all those who wouldn't go out and spend their money. Some people will even get sales ads made directly for them due to where they shop.

I'm shocked the sales have been up from last year, so far. I thought the economy was doing worse than that overall? Of course the Holiday buying season isn't over yet.

I do try to patronise small businesses..we have a bread shop 4 doors away..if there are more than 2 customers in the shop, they appear to have a panic attack!

Violence and stupidity is a Universal " custom ".

Nothing '' spread " from the US. Its always been in the UK, it just needed a catalyst.

I think they are full of BS myself.....plus the news reported Demonstrations and protests across the country over Ferguson. Every year they say they are up from last year.

In January we will get the hard facts.

In fairness we have been fighting each other for years over football so it makes sense that this has caught on. I would rather fight over a 50 inch Plasma than Everton Football club lol ;)

You don't believe the US would hide or manipulate statistics to encourage more sales, tsk tsk?

I am the same way with small shops.....we have a Small Town Donut/Bakery/Coffee shop. They put up a Dunkin Donuts across the street from them. But the majority of the town goes with the Donut Shop. Which they are not open 24 hrs. The D&D is.

We use to have a Hostess Bread Store and Sara Lee. I use to go to them until they closed them down.

Although nowadays I don't really go out shopping much other than for groceries or to take the car in.
