Increased Pay for working Thanksgiving

they're discouraged at every step these days. but yeah, eventually, the pressure will be enough that unions will form again. that's the way it usually works. people finally get enough of being treated like **** at work, and then they organize.

Keep dreaming. Unions are a thing of the past. It is why workers are relying on the democratic party to try to get them a wage increase--they have realized paying union dues will get them nothing. The only hope for workers (and manufacturing) is a real labor party that largely ignores being swept up into other issues in the left-right axis (or Labour Party if you want to be pretentious and use the British spelling).

What always shocked me when I lived in the US is that stores are open for Thanksgiving, July 4th and Veterans day, America is a very traditional, family and military based nation. Surprised me that the public are not outraged that these companies are making money on these "sacred" American holidays.

I guess they can buy even that with low low prices

Why are they open anyway? Don't you have all your sales on the Friday after?

and a labor party would render the RNC and the DNC moot, which is why the US doesn't have one. Either way, people are free to organize or not organize, and so far they do not seem willing to organize in retail.

if you so much as whisper the word "union" in a retail setting you can lose your job

not to mention stuff like this is made all the time

They have "even better sales" on Thanksgiving Day now. It started with Walmart. To stop the fighting in the aisles, they started giving tickets to buy items but you had to come into the store before the sale officially started, get your item tickets, and stand in line until whatever appointed hour at midnight and thereafter the item was officially sold. If you went at midnight when the sale starts, all the items are already claimed as people would come as groups (Person 1goes to the TV line; Person 2 to the computer line; person 3 to the appliances line, etc.) It is kind of sad to see people lined up 6 hours ahead of time to get a TV for $75 off. Now they just announce that they open at whatever hour on Thursday because people were getting irate that they did not know the doors opend 6 hours before the sale. I think last year JC Penny elected not to open until Thursday daylight because they knew everybody would be at Walmart anyway.

That's depressing. I'm actually in New Hampshire this week visiting my wife's family for Thanksgiving, always been a fan as its a genuinely nice day with good food, family and no forced gift exchange. Shame that the sales seem to be taking over it.

And if Martians show up you could be anally probed. I have no desire to stand up for people who choose not to stand up for themselves when they otherwise could. It is no different today in that regard than it was a generation ago. Businesses fight back. That does not mean that people should not fight. Use your rights or lose your rights.

I don't know about you, but I would fire someone for going on strike. That's probably why it's illegal. :D Still, they agreed to work, and by striking they clearly are not. It's not as if I don't have a legitimate reason to fire them.

The sad part to me is that these are the same people who then complain about wages when they will line up for a $100 Mexican-made TV and not in line to support US goods or jobs. I do not shop Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday of Thanksgiving week unless it is groceries/household stuff. Isn't worth it to me. I wouldn't stand in line 6-8 hours if they were giving you $100 to take them off their hands.

I think they something when I was last over called "small business Saturday" which I thought was a nice counter. It's getting to be the same in the UK now people stopped having milk delivered, local corner shop is dying out as are small butchers etc. Walmart bought out our main supermarket "Asda" and everyone seems to flock to the big name shops.

A triple pay law would insure that more stores closed on Thanksgiving, meaning that workers will makenothing. That's way better! LOL!

For most people who are forced to work on Thanksgiving it probably is way better. I don't mind him being off on Thanksgiving for free.

That is probably the idea they are going for.

I would think so. Liberals have been raging about people working on holidays for years now.

Buy that video is such BS like when they say oh if were union shop you can't help customers outside your department that is such BS, I've worked in a union shop that rule doesn't exist. I'll bet these guys aren't floor workers

I don't know. I have always stood up for myself without the need for a group to support me. When my boss told me the board decided no pay raises that year, I informed him that that there would be no more me showing up to work there at a time when I could have ill-afforded to lose my job and my boss knew very well that I couldn't as he tried to use that to get me to reconsider. I got my pay raise. When the boss told me to do something that I thought was too dangerous, I told him no. Decisions have consequences, and I choose not to cower. What you or someone else does or does not do is on you or them to live with. My philosophy about work is pretty straight-forward--Don't expect me to be a team player if you are not on my team too.

Yeah they push that in my town. There was an article about it in the paper today about small businesses in the same area of town bandying together to try to get people into their stores Saturday. I do not love Walmart and do not hate Walmart. They are a business like any other who use their advantages like any other. I go there sometimes, but mostly do not. The problem for me is that some of the other places are a huge pain to get into and out of because of the weird way a bunch of traffic patterns were altered to shoe-horn a new strip mall complex with like 60 stores into the mall/Walmart/restaurant area of town. Traffic floods this two-lane feeder road which makes left-turns impossible as there are no traffic signals except at each end of the road which none of the parking lots for the complex are routed into those intersections.

I mainly do online or mall anchor stores for most stuff. I also give a lot of gift cards.

As a waiter and bartender in fine dining I worked ALL holiday, especially Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve.

GREAT money...

Liberals don't want anybody to work... why work when the government can pay you not to.

I want workers to own their workplace so I guess that is why I am progressive and not a liberal :2grouphug
