Whether govt should put in any kind of pay requirement around the holiday can be debated. That govt can force businesses to pay more is a given.

That they can and that they should are two different things.

I didn't say they couldn't do it. I just said I didn't agree with it.

Yes, jobs are so plentiful that every person can pick and choose the perfect one for them.

It's one thing to get hired into a job where you are told- before accepting the offer - that you will need to work holidays.

It's another thing to have the business start opening on holidays AFTER you are hired, and then requiring you to work them.

And what radcen says - people have to sometimes suck it up, take the job, even if they don't like working on holidays or Sundays or whatever. And quitting is NOT an easy option in today's economy (yes, the unemployment rate has gone down considerably, but walking off a job - especially if you have a family - isn't something a responsible person does).

At any rate, there is a pretty easy solution. A business wants to open on the holiday when it didn't before? Great. Ask for volunteers - and make it worth their time. I am SURE if you pay people enough, enough will come to work to cover the shift. And don't penalize those who choose to be home with their families. Oh - also give plenty of advance warning, so people can make plans accordingly. What's wrong with courtesy, flexibility, and accommodation?

Re: Increased Pay for working Thanksgiving

A curious thing - demanding people celebrate Thanksgiving by being laid off for a day and losing pay accordingly - even if the employee opposes what Thanksgiving is celebrating (the beginning of the genocide and subjugation of 50,000,000 people). I don't raise this myself to argue against Thanksgiving as a holiday, but there are people who see it that way. Forced to celebrate - like it or not - by not getting paid for the day???

As a practical matter, giving employees "the option" of taking off is untenable for a business. The cook takes the day off - then what do the other employees do? Or a retail store with no cashiers? Either a business has a sufficient number of employees there or not.

These demands are made by people who have NO clue how business functions. Rather, they just see all businesses as evil WalMart and otherwise have no clue.

Actions have consequences. If you don't get a good education, if you don't make good life choices, if you don't have good job skills, you get stuck in jobs with downsides. Don't like it? Be a better person.

All you did was rephrase the same claptrap. There are plenty of people who are "better" people, who did make good choices and got a good education, and still cannot find decent jobs.
