IMO Ferguson was a good shooting but I am not so sure about this one. It will be interesting to see what facts come out here.

"officers responded to a 911 call about someone waving what the caller described as a “probably fake” gun at a playground.

Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said one officer fired twice after the boy pulled the fake weapon — which was lacking the orange safety indicator usually found on the muzzle — from his waistband but had not pointed it at police. The boy did not make any verbal threats, but grabbed the replica handgun after being told to raise his hands, Deputy Chief Tomba said.

“That’s when the officer fired,” he said.

Re: The next Ferguson ?

As sad as this will sound, until we know the race of the Officer that fired (and that of the other Officer who responded) we cannot say this will be the next Ferguson. The race baiting that made Ferguson a political and media firestorm needed a White Officer to suggest racism. That will be true in this case as well, but you can safely bet Al Sharpton and Jesse Jacskon are getting the riot fuel ready just in case.

I doubt this will be a "Ferguson" response.

The two parts in bold pretty much make this a valid shooting. The kid did a stupid thing and unfortunately, it cost him his life. I would also like to find out why the kid had a fake gun without the orange safety indicator on in the first place. Also, why didn't the parents teach their kid to not do such an idiotic thing like reach for something after the cops tell you to put your hands up?

So much fail on the kid and the parents its unreal. In the words of Walter the puppet (Jeff Dunham), "Dumbasses".

All true but if it was a white cop Katy bar the door. In Ferguson it was a guy that just robbed a store and beat a cop as he tried to get his gun. A 12 year old kid in a playground with a play gun is going to cause a riot if a white cop shot him.

The issue with Ferguson was there were two sides of the story and one of them was he put his hand up and then was shot. That is what fueled Ferguson. This isn't the same thing, yet.

Now if someone comes forward and claims that the cops shot him and the kid didn't reach for the gun, then it could be an issue.

Another fail was that it seems the dispatcher was told multiples times it appeared to be a fake gun and that was not relayed to the police.

Maybe but I still think if a white cop shot this kid nothing else matters.

What's fail is today's societal fear and police responses to kids playing on playgrounds. Jesus we used to bring cap guns to the school playground all the time to play cops and robbers. No one called the police and no kids got shot.

So they say. I don't believe it.

Very good point!

Well it appears the kid reached for it like it was real, so the cops responded.

I can see this as happening the other way where the gun is real and a cop get killed. With no public outrage to boot.

Sad situation definitely, but sorry the fail is on the kid.

Yes and now kids are bringing REAL guns to the playground and even doing gang activity, dealing drugs, and doing assaults as well. Yes, times have changed haven't they?

The kid was 12 and the police officer was a little quick on the trigger.

It is not a fact that BB/pellet guns have ornage tips - they are not toys like the air soft guns.

Yes the kid was 12 meaning he should have known better than to have a replica of a gun without any safety markings on it and grab said replica after police are telling you to put your hands up.

Those two things add up to a dumb kid getting shot.

Teachers and parents werent scared little children themselves back then.

Re: The next Ferguson ?

Well the article I read said he had an airsoft gun. If that is correct he had a BB gun, than that isn't a toy and the cops were even more justified to shoot after he grabbed it.

I heard the audio. The 911 caller did not say it APPEARED to be fake. What he said was I dont know...its probably fake. He described it as a pistol and was concerned enough about the incident (appearance of the weapon, behavior of the 12 year old, etc) to call 911. When the police arrived on scene, they knew the basics...young kid pointing a pistol at people. They told him to raise his hands. Instead of raising his hands, he is reported to have gone for the toy gun. If that is what happened, then its tragic, but it is a good shoot.

And most of our toy guns did NOT have orange safety tips either.

How many 12 year olds don't do stupid things. A 300# 19 year old thug did something stupid and got killed for it. So how smart should a 12 year old be? I'll wait and see, but seems we have a pattern of quick on the draw no matter what going on.

I don't think it is a quick draw when the kid grabs for a possible weapon. I'm reading conflicting articles that say it was a BB gun and one that says it was an airsoft gun. If it was a BB gun, that IS a weapon and the kid was stupid either way.

Yes, kids do stupid things and there are instances where those stupid things can cause injury and in this case death. Darwin's way of weeding out the dumb folk I guess.

Either way, drawing a gun from your waistband exposes the tip far too late and is a very, very bad idea after a LEO tells you to raise your hands.

Airsoft isn't going to hurt anyone, unless maybe you hit them in the eye.

Granted, I've seen airsoft guns hard to tell from the real deal.

It's understandable... but it is a shame this happened.

I blame the parents more than the kid.
