One woman, Shawn Thompson, reportedly received more than $100,000 after their alleged affair started in 1974. Thompson’s daughter, Autumn Jackson, has claimed Cosby is her father, which Cosby has denied.

One woman whose name is on the receipts reached out to the Daily News and said the payments funded her son’s private school tuition. Scotti is confident that he was sexually involved with the women receiving payments, and came forward now because he “felt sorry for the women.”
“Why else would he be sending money?” Scotti asked. “He was sending these women $2,000 a month. What else could I think?”

Any way this plays out, it doesn't look good for America's dad. Best case scenario involves this being a case of a man paying off women to keep quiet about his affairs. Worst case scenario and he sexually assaulted some of them and paid them to keep quiet. There is also the possibility that 15 women, who Bill Cosby was giving money to for no particular reason, decided to create a narrative of sexual assault allegations before and after his pound cake speech. Finally, there is a possibility that Bill Cosby was making studio accountants give money away to women who didn't work for the studio.

However it plays out, the America's dad image is pretty much destroyed. Now, before people go on and say he made this up: I understand why people would be inclined to think that the women made this up. However: What does a man have to gain by admitting he helped Cosby pay off these women?

I hope the courts clean this up quickly. Not that I really care how the cards fall, as long as it is clear that there was or was not crime and if that the crime finds retribution.

Why would the courts become involved. Most of the cases I believe are past the statute of limitation for prosecution on sexual assault charges.

If Bill Cosby paid off women, then they accepted the money as settlement to their case.

Unless someone is claiming that Cosby continues to forced, coerced, or intimidate their silence, criminal charges can not be filed.

Well, in a lot of these cases, the statute of limitations has expired. However, if he keeps quiet long enough, there is one case he could potentially avoid having to go to court for as long as the claimant decides she doesn't want to go to court. There is also the issue that the allegations occurred in different places and each jurisdiction has different degrees of sexual assault as well as different statute of limitations as well as other crimes these allegations could fall under.

With that said, the possibility of this going to trial is hindered by first and foremost time. If we are to believe some of the men on this forum, rape becomes less rapey after a certain time has passed. Then, there are the allegations that many of these women are doing it for.... the fame? I'm not sure what long term fame is supposed to come from coming out as a rape victim. Then, there is Cosby's power and celebrity capital. Who wants to prosecute America's dad? Who wants to be the investigator having to walk around NBC offices asking people about the probability of Fat Albert being a rapist? Who wants to be photographed escorting Dr. Huxtable to prison?

It seems that if Bill Cosby plays his cards right and maintains his silence, he could potentially avoid this ever getting to a court for various reasons (among them, lack of evidence, missing evidence, sloppy police investigations). However, the damage is already there. He's being smacked around by all these allegations and he's not saying one word in his defence. That doesn't look good for a man who has an opinion on everything.

There is a problem. Each one of these cases and of those not yet known will have to be looked at. There can be rape, statutory rape, black mail, prostitution, if that is forbidden anywhere any more.... The judicial system can hardly allow this to remain open, now that it has hit the front page. That would be destructive.

Oh. No question there. It is a messy can of worms and nobody in hie/her right mind would want to take it on. But having hit the front page with the implied suspicion of blackmail and rape? I do not think it would be wise of a judicial system to let it ride.

The system will not get involved by accusations on TV. Someone must swear out a complaint. The system does not watch Entertainment Tonight to see whom to indict.

There are questions of jurisdiction and standing. The DA in Las Vegas is not going to assign a prosecutor to investigate which alleged assault happened in LV.

Can you give me a list of "accusers"? Where and when each "assault" was to have occurred? What list is a DA or prosecutor to work from?

To be honest, the judicial system has been letting celebrities get away with everything for decades. There use to be more coke in Hollywood than in New York City. Do you believe any famous coke users ever got busted in the 80s? Ike Turner beat Tina for something like 5 years before it became public and even after that, no charges were filed. Bobby and Whitney Houston openly did drugs for a decade and nobody ever came to arrest them. The law is not applied equally and never has been. Specially for people with enough money to avoid prison. Bill Cosby never did drugs, never was an alcoholic, and his son was murdered by a white racist. How many people are going to try and take him to prison even if he did do it?

Interesting. I would have thought that initial suspicion would be justified in such a set of cases. It is certainly in the public interest to make sure that the public know that rather severe crimes were or were not committed and that the judicial system clears these thing up. This is after all suspected real crime and not civil law.

PS: I like your footnote.

It is certainly right, that the precedence of looking the other way is everywhere. This has already gnawed at the legitimacy of our legal system to the point, where it is under siege. That was part of our problem when crime rates exploded. We have to do a number of things to clean our act up. This is one of them.

To be fair, the crime rate exploded, but so did prison populations. Today, violent crime has gone down for half a century and yet people are still arguing that we need to legislate more people into our prison system. The only constant in this issue has been that if you're extremely rich, you can avoid prison time thanks to affluenza.

This is going from bad to worse, all those running to the media saying they knew something.

Yep, at this point, even if Cosby didn't do it, the fact that he has been silent is more damning than anything else. Ironically, silence implies consent can be applied to quite a few things in this situation. At this point, there are too many questions:

Were the women silent because they agreed with what Cosby did to them?
Is Cosby silent because he did it and anything he says in public could be used against him?
Is he silent out of some sense of moral superiority?
Why was he paying these women off?
What do these women have to gain by coming forward?
What does this man have to gain by coming forward?
Why were the allegations not taken seriously by authorities?
What role did Cosby's lawyers play in keeping the women silent?
Were some of them intimidated?

The list goes on and on.

This is a pretty great article on the subject. I'm just sickened by this. Like the article said, to believe Cosby you are not just taking his word over another person, you are taking his word over 15 different people.

The Rape Accusations Against Bill Cosby Must Not Be Ignored - The Atlantic

To be fair, it's nothing new for multiple people to jump on the he-raped-me or affair bandwagon. However this argument is pretty convincing:

The Rape Accusations Against Bill Cosby Must Not Be Ignored - The Atlantic

A defense of Cosby requires that one believe that several women have decided to publicly accuse one of the most powerful men in recent Hollywood history of a crime they have no hope of seeing prosecuted, and for which they are seeking no damages. The alternative is to see one of the most celebrated public fathers of our time, and one of the great public scourges of black morality, revealed as a serial rapist.

That's pretty much the gist of it. These women aren't seeking damages. They aren't looking to get their faces on TV. So why come out with the accusations and reveal they were rape victims? It doesn't make sense this late in the race unless they're looking to damage Cosby's reputation as a wholesome icon. However, even that raises basic questions as to why and what they stand to gain...

Victim Status? Exorcising regrets? I don't know. Being a serial philanderer does not make him a serial rapist. What is "rape" is so distorted these days from what it was a generation ago, that I have trouble believing that he raped them as opposed to just used them.

Hard to hold a pen when you are drugged out by the rapist, I mean lover.

He has 4 daughters. I bet they are crushed and feeling the heat. He only destroyed his image for those who saw him as Americas dad, but he's now destroying his wife and his kids lives bc of these claims. This is more than him being "America's" dad to his family. And yes, I do thing he's guilty after the credible law and order actress spoke out.

This has something to do with crime in the lowly and middle ranges of society. But it is a less direct impact than is easy to grab hold of. As systems become viewed as irrelevant, arbitrary or unfair, only their danger potential to the potential perp begins to hold dissuasive power. Only the punishment prevents people from committing crimes. That is quite established as far as I know in sociology. The country seems to have made some progress in reducing the number of severe crimes. The number of people in and affected by the penal system is, however, extraordinary and rather disconcerting.
It is, in fact, so high that it directly reduces crime by taking the relevant groups off the streets. This is a fine solution in a situation out of hand. Presumably it is not very efficient, however. Truth is, that I have not seen any studies of this specific point.

Who ever would want to hold a pen through all the excitement? Or is that some type of fetish I do not know?

What makes her "credible" specifically?

And here's what she said:

I did stand-in work on The Cosby show back in the day and YES, Bill Cosby was VERY inappropriate with me. It started innocently, lunch in his dressing room, daily, then onto weird acting exercises were he would move his hands up and down my body, (can't believe I fell for that) I was instructed to NEVER tell anyone what we did together, (he said other actors would become jealous) and then fortunately, I dodged the ultimate bullet with him when he asked me to come to his house, take a shower so we could blow dry my hair and see what it looked like straightened. At that point my own red flags went off and I told him,

"No, I'll just come to work tomorrow with my hair straightened".

I then started to take notice and found another actress, a stand-in as well, and we started talking..... A LOT .... turns out he was doing the same thing to her, almost by the numbers, BUT, she did go to his house and because I will not name her, and it is her story to tell, all I'll say is she awoke, after being drugged, vomited, and then Cosby told her there's a cab waiting for you outside.

I have ABSOLUTELY no reason to lie or make up this up!

Anyone that knows me, knows that!

Now you have a first hand account of my experience with Mr. Cosby.

I missed the accusation of "rape" in there.
