Kenya bus attack: Al-Shabaab militants kill 28 non-Muslims who failed to recite Koran

Terror organisation al-Shabaab have claimed an attack that killed 28 people on a bus in Northern Kenya.

Around 100 gunmen, who are believed to have travelled over the border in Mandera county from Somalia, took the bus off the road before separating the passengers.

It is believed they asked travellers to recite passages from the Koran, shooting dead those who were unable to prove they were practising Muslims.

A statement on a website linked to the extremist organisation said the attack was carried out in retaliation for security raids on mosques in the coastal city of Mombassa earlier this week.

Kenya's Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government claimed on their official account earlier today: "Attackers camp has been destroyed by KDF using helicopters and jets, many killed, operations continue."
The bus was travelling to the Kenyan capital Nairobi when it was stopped in the northern county that borders Somalia.

Around 60 people were on the bus at the time of the attack, and it is thought that among the dead are Kenyan public servants – including four police officers - who were heading to the capital for the Christmas holiday.

Mandera East deputy County Commissioner Elvis Korir said the passengers were then separated into two groups. The Somali passengers watched in horror as non-Somalis were herded away from the bus and then killed.

al-Shabaab probably thinks that they are punishing Kenya for participating in the African joint force that has been pushing them out of territory lately.

? how so ?

Many Muslims in Nairobi (even neighborhoods), ethnic tensions. Probably tense in Mombasa as well.

Kenya initiated the "invasion" of Somalia (with the transitional government's consent) after a spat of kidnappings. The US supported the action (materials, intel and I suspect forward field hospitals). They were later joined by Ethiopia, then the East African Economic Union, then the African Union.

Al Shabab was removed from power in Mogadishu, much of the country and eventually the largest port town. Al Shabab has been decimated by Kenya and the accompanying forces.

Security is on high alert. Some checkpoints are being set up in high dense areas.

Yup. Most recently they lost their last major port access, which is really going to screw their finances long term. MINUSMA has been effective, properly supported.

The Kenyan Army's casualty and death rates have been what one would expect during a developed world invasion of the developing world. That points not only to materials and intel but medical support as well.

Kenya has a battalion of US ranger tabs.

One day, in the rural village I lived in for two years, I saw a "US Paratrooper" sticker on the back of a car. It looked just like the ones at Benning and Bragg. I asked whose car it was, it was a guy that owned a shop in the main market but he was only around once in a while because he was in the army. I went to his shop and met him. He was airborne qualified, via Ft. Benning. He worked with the Ranger bat and told me about it and the numbers of Kenyans that had completed the school.

Well, Moi stepped aside. How many leaders with dictatorial power have ever stepped aside and allowed elections? I think he might be the only one. In 2003, the first multiparty elections were held. In 2007, there was violence following the elections. In 2012 the elections were peaceful.

The Constitution adopted by public referendum in 2011 is the most progressive constitution in the world.

It's still a mess compared to the West, but it's well on the path to effective representative governance.

Kenyan security forces have killed 100 militants, an official said Sunday, one day after a deadly attack on a bus.

Forces crossed into Somalia to launch two "successful operations on the hideouts of the perpetrators," said Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto. The camp where the attack was planned was destroyed, he said.
