Republicans weigh government shutdown to stop Obama on immigration

Republicans weigh government shutdown to stop Obama on immigration

One Republican leader on Sunday held open the possibility that his party could move to shut down the government in an attempt to stop President Barack Obama from taking executive action on immigration policy.

A vocal group of conservatives in the House of Representatives is pressing to use government funding as leverage to prevent any White House moves that would allow millions of undocumented immigrants to stay and work in the United States.
In contrast, last time the GOP shut down the government:

In the aftermath, eight in 10 Americans say they disapprove of the shutdown. Two in three Republicans or independents who lean Republican share a negative view of the impasse. And even a majority of those who support the tea party movement disapprove.

I'm sure that this time, a government shutdown will be positive for the GOPs image. Flight attendants, PR appointees and HS students will support this and it will give the GOP an even bigger majority in 2016. Using the shutdown option will also bring in support from Independents. They seem to be in favor of such things.

The implied assumption is that the GOP will shutdown the government. That's not yet happened, and I kinda doubt that's what the GOP leadership will allow to happen, they may not be able to prevent it.

At present, they are only considering it.

Seems that regardless of the situation whenever there's a government shutdown, the rule in DC is to blame the Republicans.

One can only hope that the GOP comes up with something better than this to oppose Obama's unpopular immigration OE plans.

Yes, shut the damn government down. Impeach Obama too.

Match your words with action. Bring it on.

The GOP House has had more than enough time to work on immigration reform in their four years in power.
They simply can't get 218 votes out of their caucus on this issue, even if they had all 435 seats.

All they know is NO, going on perpetual vacation starting July 31st and politically calculating that NO action is good action .

That is why they got elected this time around, huh?
The truth of the matter is that it was the Dems which caused the shutdown.

Amnesty isn't that popular amongst the population. So I doubt that it would have that much affect.
It seems to me that they wouldn't even have to shut down the entire government to prevent Obama from harming this country any further, just prohibit any spending or allocation of funds on that which Obama wishes to do.

Too bad the Democrats weren't bright enough to use the last GOP shutdown to their advantage.
The GOP money-men would have smeared them to no end if roles were reversed.

While the Kochs and company were hammering Dem Senators like Hagan with tens of millions of negative ads after the ACA roll-out,
Dems played Dukakis/Horton on steroids and lost the election early and often.

By the time they spent money, it was far too late .

Re: Republicans weigh government shutdown to stop Obama on immigration

It's not decide as of yet.
Republican leaders are hearing from their most conservative members, who want to stop the president from acting alone to perhaps legalize as many as 5 million immigrants now living in the United States illegally.

“If the president does something really substantial, like what we are hearing he will do, I think you would have a sizable uprising from our conference who would be willing to go as far as we need to on defunding,” Rep. John Fleming, R-La., told the Examiner.
    . . . .
Both Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., have pledged in recent days that the government would not shut down this time, though Boehner promised to fight executive action “tooth and nail.”
    . . .
“The power of the purse is the preferred order,” newly re-elected Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said Friday on the Laura Ingraham radio
    show.

So it's far from settled that the GOP is going to shutdown the government. More likely, they'll add provisions to the required funding bill that will defund the EO immigration actions that Obama wants to take, which seems to be a reasonable and not too extreme move to counter.

I think that same "the public will be pissed at the GOP over a shutdown" argument was used about a year ago. Yet the voters punished the GOP for their obstruction by giving them total control of congress. Government shutdowns only send liberals into a frenzy because government is the center of their universe. Most rational people barely notice if the notice at all. And if Obama vetoes legislation passed by both houses of congress, why isn't he the one shutting down government?

The shutdowns are not about pleasing the American people, but business partners. You'd think people would realize that already. The GOP doesn't give two ****s about its constituents.

Re: Republicans weigh government shutdown to stop Obama on immigration

So some on the far right in the GOP are calling for a shutdown to get into a Mexican stand-off with Obama over amnesty and that is translated into being a foregone conclusion of it happening by some in the press and some here?

    Right...
Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, don't blame someone else, or expect others to make a change, you should stop complaining and make a different choice. Remember, the circumstances of your birth don't determine the outcome of your life.
