Just came over "breaking news" on the telly-o-vision.

Huh. Odd how that decision came just after the election, eh?

Before or after the election is irrelevant to me. I just wish the president would either do what it take to drive ISIS out of Iraq or just get the heck out completely and let the chips fall where they may. This limited this and limited that, this gradual escalation, seems to me all of this had been tried before some 50 years ago.

Either go whole hog or don't go hog at all. Getting in and winning the dang thing as fast as possible with doing whatever it takes will save lives in the long run. ***** footing around and lengthening this thing out will cause a whole lot of more lives than necessary. I repeat, either do what is necessary now or just stop the whole thing cold.

Wouldn't this have drummed up liberal votes? Especially from those that think Obama is too moderate.

Obama's Iraq is coming home to roost. More troops tk, and 5 billion dollars. And its transparently clear that he didn't want this announcement made until after the elections, this allowed him to avoid the headlines on tuesday, and appear to be working with republicans today (to clean up his own mess).

Just Obama's Iraq right? Not Bushes. Not our foreign policy for the last 14 years right? Just Obama's fault.

ISIS exists in Iraq today because president chump left Iraq to the wolves. We left, they filled the vacuum, and as a result many more have been and will be killed. Obama lost the peace in Iraq.

How soon some forget history..
Remember Al-Maliki calling for us to get out of his country? Remember the Iraqi Parliament vote? Also ISIS (formally known as Al-Qaeda in Iraq) was formed in 2004.

 Maliki wanted a minimum of 10K troops left behind in Iraq. The President told him he was on his own. Witness the results of the "not our problem" foreign policy.

Obama wanted the headline of "ending the war in Iraq", and he was willing to get that by leaving Iraq to ISIS. Iraq wanted us there, Obama wanted us out. This is the result. As disturbing, he now wants to do the same in Afghanistan.

"I do not care about what’s being said. I care about what’s on paper and what has been agreed to. The withdrawal of forces agreement [Status of Forces Agreement or SOFA] expires on Dec. 31, 2011. The last American soldier will leave Iraq."

Iraq’s Government, Not Obama, Called Time on the U.S. Troop Presence | TIME.com
"In one of his final acts in office, President Bush in December of 2008 had signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the Iraqi government that set the clock ticking on ending the war he’d launched in March of 2003. The SOFA provided a legal basis for the presence of U.S. forces in Iraq after the United Nations Security Council mandate for the occupation mission expired at the end of 2008. But it required that all U.S. forces be gone from Iraq by January 1, 2012, unless the Iraqi government was willing to negotiate a new agreement that would extend their mandate. And as Middle East historian Juan Cole has noted, “Bush had to sign what the [Iraqi] parliament gave him or face the prospect that U.S. troops would have to leave by 31 December, 2008, something that would have been interpreted as a defeat… Bush and his generals clearly expected, however, that over time Washington would be able to wriggle out of the treaty and would find a way to keep a division or so in Iraq past that deadline.”

But ending the U.S. troop presence in Iraq was an overwhelmingly popular demand among Iraqis, and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki appears to have been unwilling to take the political risk of extending it. While he was inclined to see a small number of American soldiers stay behind to continue mentoring Iraqi forces, the likes of Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, on whose support Maliki’s ruling coalition depends, were having none of it. Even the Obama Administration’s plan to keep some 3,000 trainers behind failed because the Iraqis were unwilling to grant them the legal immunity from local prosecution that is common to SOF agreements in most countries where U.S. forces are based.

lol, didn't folks vote for him because he promised to get the troops out? now that it's blowing up in his face you all shift the blame yet again.

you folks can't have it both ways, you all wanted out immediately, and that's what happened, and this is the bed Obama made.

Hey. I never wanted troops to stay behind in the first place. Hell I think we shouldnt of invaded in the first place. I'm simply stating on how the event unfolded.

I've actually come around to agree that we should not have gone in the first place. that said.

Yeah - I get that that has been the narrative. Unfortunatley, we have since found out (thanks to multiple SEC DEFs, CIA head, Ambassador to Iraq, and elements of the negotiating team who have gone public) that it's inaccurate. Maliki wanted and was willing to make the pitch for 20K. We were negotiating him down to 10K, at which point he could still build an alliance between the Sunni and Kurds against his own hard Shia flank, however, a couple of months before the turnover date, the White House suddenly insisted on a ceiling of 5K, effectively torpedoing the talks and convincing Maliki that he would have zero support to build and sustain an alliance government. Then we put Biden in charge of making sure that happened. That worked about as well as expected.

As the last troops were leaving, Maliki went to Obama and said that he had evidence that his Sunni VP might be planning a coup, as the coalition government which Biden was supposed to be pulling together was failing, and it was obvious that if he wanted to survive he'd have to depend upon al-Sadr. Obama told him "You're on your own."

:( And that was the way of it. Obama was warned up and down the chain what would happen, and he either disagreed, or did not care.

Sorry that is Maliki in his own words and literally how it happened. We were willing to leave troops behind in Iraq, Maliki wanted some as well, however Maliki's own men and government did not want them.

he he he...

It hurts eh?

yes, it is Obama's Iraq, the world has been calling it that.

He defined it when he pulled out to look good for 2012, he owned it when he mission creeped Libya and created ISIS, and he bought it when he decided he was going back in with this "no boots on the ground" limited engagement.....

Classic Obama and his lame brained supporters to take six long years of lies and politicizing EVERY issue and insist Obama has had no effect. Unfortunately, his incompetence and making everything about his image is coming home to roost...it's payback time.

This will go down in history as "Obama's war" and I believe stands a good chance of being Obama's Katrina.

Of course he waited till after the election..everything with this guy is about his personal image...notice also its leaked on a Friday...

we were willing to leave behind too few to make a difference - Maliki wanted enough to help him hold the country together, and was willing to put together the coalition government to get us the SOFA if we would back him. We didn't, and so he didn't. That is literally what happened. If you don't like it - take it up with Secretary Gates et. al.

Your forgetting the most important part. Malikis own men, and the Iraqi parliament would not allow this to happen.... They wanted none, zero.

Of course it is. Its easy to narrow down and only blame one person, because everything is so simple. But see post #14
