Saira Blair Becomes Youngest Elected Politician in US

First year she can legally vote and she wins a seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates. Wow!

Not particularly a fan, especially when it comes to her social issues, but I wish her the best of luck. We could use more young people in office!

pro gun is good. the opposition to same sex marriage is silly. No one is hurt in the least by state law recognizing gay marriage

I might not support everything she does but I think it's good to break away from the norm of having middle ages-elderly individuals all having law degrees as career politicians occupying most of our elected offices (no offense to anyone that matches that description :D )

Well, there is the question of keeping a religious term (if it is such) in law.

doesn't matter she is allowed to express her views and her opinion on subject matters. that is what this country is about. this you have to conform mentality is well sickening.
if the people where she lives doesn't like then they don't vote for her.

however this goes 100% against the GOPs war on women meme. more so from the state of WV.
democrats usually outnumber republicans 2:1 and when it comes to representatives they usually swing democrat.

I was surprised when caprio won the senate bid. I was more surprised when Rockefeller left office.

WV could be considered a swing state even though it only carries 5 EC's it still goes either way depending on who is running.

I would always vote for a pro gun anti gay marriage politician over a supposed supporter of "choice" who wants to ban guns

I like her.

She is off to great start in the world of politics!

I could never vote for an 18 year old to represent me. She has no life experience, and her opinions will undoubtedly change as she matures. She is also in college, so she has to balance being a college Freshman with learning the ropes of the House of Delegates.

She doesn't know what it's like to buy a house, pay bills, try raising a family in the current economy, etc.

I read her campaign page, and I was unimpressed.

West Virginia has a part-time legislature and most legislators have full-time jobs. If elected, I will attend WVU during the Fall Semester, defer the Spring Semester and attend summer classes. I already know the ropes and I can multitask too.

Trust me with your vote and I will make you proud!

That reminds me of my nieces begging for a puppy, saying they clean up and completely take care of it. It's easy to say, but it's hard to do. She is starting college and major role in her community at the same time. I would have been hesitate to vote for her.

Then she sites her work experience:

Student Teller for Eastern Panhandle Federal Credit Union
Apple Crest Orchard
Sunset Water Services

I just don't understand why the people in her district voted for her...

Start when you are in your mid-to-late 20s, with the education and with some experience. I'm not going to say I hope she tanks, but I'm awaiting the representative to wish she had an internship at the very least.

I'm not much for youth politics. I find that to be something a Democrat would do.

I want a few gray hairs, receding hairlines, and retirement plans in the back of their head.

About Saira - dev

I just don't understand why the people in her district voted for her...

Looking at how unsatisfied everyone is with our current crop of politicians how can she be any worse? We need to change things up, this is one example of how.

I think it's great that one so young is willing to take the time and effort to get involved in politics. She could just learn more than she will in college. Meanwhile, youth and enthusiasm just might accomplish more than experience, cynicism, and having sold out to the highest bidder.

(yes, that last was cynicism. What can I say? My youth and enthusiasm are long gone.)

Very cool! What an ambitious young lady she is. I like this.

Damn, she looks like a baby!

Love her stance on guns & WV being a right to work state, don't care for her opposition to SSM, don't care for her belief about religion and its impact on running the country. She'll be one to watch though.

I was more than a little dubious until I heard Saira's interview on "Fox and Friends" the other morning. I was putting on my makeup and just listening but was so startled/impressed by what I was hearing that I left the bathroom to stand in front of the TV.

In addition to growing up in politics because her father was a state senator, Saira talked about participating in her state's "Youth in Government" program and the experience of helping writing a bill, shepherding it through committees, and experiencing the full parliamentary procedure.

I've just Googled for the vid clip so that others can hear what she has to say for themselves. I was pretty impressed with her maturity. She is definitely not your ordinary college freshman, a demographic I have considerable expertise with. 18-Year-Old Republican Saira Blair Is America's Youngest Lawmaker | Fox News Insider

I can't wait to see her make her head go all the way around. Oh wait. That was Linda. Linda Blair.

I am all for young people in politics, but 18 is a bit too young. I think you need to be out of the house and in the real world working, paying taxes, paying rent or house payments, and so on before you enter into politics. Otherwise you have no idea what its like to be some average Joe trying to make it in the real world - which is exactly the problem with some old gray haired career politician.

"We could use more young people"

We can use more competent people, I can give a **** if they're young, old, middle-aged, black, blah blah.

I want someone who is qualified, I can give a crap about how they look or what age they are.

"don't care for her opposition to SSM"

Then why exactly are you a libertarian? One who advocates for the liberty of all?

I have found that most "libertarians" are more concerned with liberty for them.:)

Your lean says libertarian and yet you don't care that this woman doesn't want to give gays their rights...

Fail post. Nothing new for you.

I said I don't care for her opposition to SSM. If you paid attention in high school instead of goofing off, you'd know what that means. "I don't care for" means I disagree with her opposition to SSM.

Go away.

You saying you don't care means you don't care that she opposes SSM. Choose better words so that the meaning doesn't get mixed up.

No, I've met some true libertarians like TurtleDude and Telekat. But you're right, there are some libertarians that look out for their own liberty and can care less for the liberty of others.

Your post is a lie.

I said I don't care for her opposition to SSM.

I don't have to choose words better. I assume people are smart enough to know what the phrase means.

Go away.
