You're right, it will be a long time coming.

That's not because a broken drum is being beaten, but because Love's election is no more of an indication that racism/sexism is dead in the Republican party, then a black president is an indication that racism is dead in the US (or in politics).

Systemic racism and sexism are still problems in the US as a whole, and, surprise surprise, in the republican party. You can't measure the elimination of racism or sexism by how well the top 1% of the group are doing, but by the majority of said group. It's going to be a long time coming because we're still a ways from the finish line.

Yesterday was a great leap towards that finish line however and I applaud Love.

Today, voters from a conservative state made those arguments a little bit harder to make. In Utah, Mia Love became the first black Republican woman — and first Haitian American — elected to Congress.

For the GOP — a house divided that faces significant demographic hurdles to winning the White House in 2016 even as it celebrates President Obama’s shellacking — this was huge. A party threatened with electoral extinction among African Americans and immigrants now has someone to brag about in Washington. In a wave election less about fresh Republican ideas than fervid disapproval of all things presidential, Love’s compelling personal story is an oasis. She’s not just a black face in what’s often described as a party full of angry old white men. She’s a path forward.

Good for her. I've followed her for a while now. The daughter of Haitian immigrants.

So much for all Republicans being racist and sexist.
Hey, your first black congressperson! Congratulations, guys!

Oh, did I just get punked? I didn't read past the headline.

edit: oh, congresswoman, right. Well still, congratulations, and welcome to the 20th century!

JC Watts was black. Tim Scott was a Congressional rep before he was a Senator. Allen West was a black Conrgressperson. There may have been others but I'm very blonde today. Not enough sleep.

You would think people in the Democratic Party would be happy for her success given her background and everything else.

...And on a somewhat related note, you would think everyone would be happy about Republican Elise Stefanik becoming the youngest Congresswoman ever elected too.

See edit (not enough sleep on my end too, apparently).

Except you said the 20th century. We're in the 21st century. I think we both need more sleep.
