Pope says evolution, Big Bang are real

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has waded into the controversial debate over the origins of human life, saying the big bang theory did not contradict the role of a divine creator, but even required it.
This should cause some interesting discussions

Pope Francis declares ... God isn't 'a magician with a magic wand'

and here:
Pope Francis:

Unlike much of evangelical Protestantism in the U.S., Catholic teaching traditionally has not been at odds with evolution. In 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed there was no opposition between evolution and Catholic doctrine. In 1996, St. John Paul II endorsed Pius’ statement

Whew! [wipes sweat off forehead]. I was really on the fence about those!

This comes as breaking news to all non-Catholics, apparently? This has been the long standing position of the Catholic Church.

Likewise the non-Catholic world popped their collective monocle when the pope said that God was not divine, proving that non-Catholics are unfamiliar with the word "divine" as used in Church doctrine. Divine meaning "Of God" or "from God" rather than interchangeable with "The Creator". In Catholic terminology calling God "divine" is like saying the watchmaker is a watch.

Science does not negate the existence of God. Evolution and/or Big bang, acknowledging them, has no bearing at all on the existence of God.
Of course, there is NO evidence of the "existence" of ANY 'god', much less the one you probably have in mind. (that is contradictory to most/at least 3/4 of the other gods/religions such as the Hindu god/s etc)
And of course, Some 'gods' and interpretations of them, ARE contradicted by evolution.
That very debate comes up alot in the philosophy section.

Benedict also seemed to be down with the Big Bang as well. I take Francis to be reaffirming that the church is still cool with science for the most part. You know, just for those who might be wondering if a change in pope meant science might stop existing or something.

Well, as I see it, Francis is making news in restating Church positions because a lot of people see him as more liberal when in fact he is not diverging from Church positions in the slightest.

It seems to be a special skill that Pope Francis has of stating the Church position in a way that sounds fresh to a lot of people.

Agreed. As Christian sects go, Catholocism hasn't been the most backwards one for a pretty long time now.

I've found as I have gone through various other Christian religions (currently attending a Bible Church with my wife) that the Catholic Church is, whether fellow Christians like it or not, the anchor of the Christian faith. I haven't found a Christian faith yet that doesn't define itself by its divergence from Catholic doctrine.

You can type that all day, but the existence or lack of existence of God or any other belief as to how the universe was created is a matter of faith. Ive been to the philosophy section and the majority of the posts there are just ignorance on display for the other posters.

Once again, atheists fail to acknowledge that the vast majority of Christians accept science in all its forms as nothing more than further example of God's amazing work.

The wonderment of science reaffirms faith. It doesn't contradict it.

LOL, wow.

You're way of thinking has been around for about as long as spit in a bucket. Liberals always seem to think history began the day they were born.

So yes, the Catholic church has been around for a rather long time. Good point. LOL

I know what you mean. When I figured out how a combustion engine works I immediately realized that Henry Ford never existed.

Again, a stilted BS claim from atheists.

There are numerous holes in the Theory of Evolution. Whatever the truth is, that isn't it either. It explains almost nothing; it has the depth of a 5th-grade essay.

No, your rebuttal against Evolution has the depth of a Crayon drawing in Kindergarten.

Evolution is fact.

Period.

It does not attempt to explain the origins of life, but it explains how life came to be as it is today.

Such a statement reveals a person's near total ignorance of the subject

nonsense. Please point out said "holes" in TOE.

This should be in the religious section so I could say it is the beginning of the end of Christianity as brick by brick the wall is coming down. Soon science will rule the world and we will all have calculators above our doorways in our homes.

As more and more is learned, it is a given that superstitious beliefs fade...at least among those educated and willing to part from the things they were told as children.

It has yet to explain the origins of man.

In that sense, Evolution is still a THEORY.
