Criminalizing an act differently based upon its motive is positively vile and the sure sign of an authoritarian mindset.
If you're saying that unjustly assaulting someone because of one arbitrary, invalid reason is different than unjustly assaulting someone for a different reason, you are saying that of the two equally beaten up folks, one is more of a victim and the other is less important.
Since we have a criminal justice system to protect and promote our human rights, because all men are created equal, the notion of "hate crime" itself is anathema.
