I am a nurse who has just returned to the U.S. after working with Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone - an Ebola-affected country. I have been quarantined in New Jersey. This is not a situation I would wish on anyone, and I am scared for those who will follow me.
I am scared about how health care workers will be treated at airports when they declare that they have been fighting Ebola in West Africa. I am scared that, like me, they will arrive and see a frenzy of disorganization, fear and, most frightening, quarantine.
I arrived at the Newark Liberty International Airport around 1 p.m. on Friday, after a grueling two-day journey from Sierra Leone. I walked up to the immigration official at the airport and was greeted with a big smile and a “hello.”
I told him that I have traveled from Sierra Leone and he replied, a little less enthusiastically: “No problem. They are probably going to ask you a few questions.”
He put on gloves and a mask and called someone. Then he escorted me to the quarantine office a few yards away. I was told to sit down. Everyone that came out of the offices was hurrying from room to room in white protective coveralls, gloves, masks, and a disposable face shield.

I think it's really as much as anything a timing issue. When emergency protocols are put in place, someone is going to get caught unawares in the early implementations. Now the global community knows that this is what will happen and it will smooth out as well.

It's amazing how many just a day or two ago were screaming about closing the borders and flights from West Africa or anyone coming from West Africa, but somehow that wasn't going to put out anyone or inconvenience or be poorly handled? How bizarre, I guess so long as it happens over there, that inconvenience and frustration and having your life seemingly unfairly interrupted wouldn't have crossed anyone's radar.

We tried voluntary quarantine for those that returned from helping people with Ebola in West Africa. That didn't work as was seen by the TV reporter that happened to be a doctor and the DWB doctor in NYC that went all over the place, including bowling and actually now has Ebola.

It would be criminal for the government to not take reasonable actions to quarantine these people until it can be proven that they are not infected.

Hell, we quarantine animals and food products from around the world coming here to the US every day. Why is it a bad idea to do the same for people that have in fact come in contact with Ebola patients in West Africa? To not do so would be decried by the masses, as is being done in the case of the NYC doctor.

The, "don't worry, be happy", strategy isn't working. One can't help but wonder if that's by design.

A medical professional should understand the purpose of a 21 day quarantine for people returning from infected countries. She'll survive.

I'm missing something. What isn't working about the strategy? Who has been infected but wouldn't have been if we'd only listened to fear mongers and quarantined everyone for 21 or maybe 42 days in medical isolation?

The only thing that's "not working" is a bunch of politicians and the press who have ginned up irrational fears then pandered to them.

Right, so she'd understand a quarantine of someone with no symptoms serves no useful purpose, especially a medical professional who is completely familiar with the risks and symptoms. And she'd understand the quarantine is a huge barrier for U.S. based volunteers and others to travel to Africa to help contain this disease.
 
She's a selfish individual and thankfully her complaining us falling on deaf ears for the most part.

I don't feel sorry for her one bit.

Right, selfish because she went to Africa and dealt with the sick and dying in challenging conditions, and put herself at risk of dying while doing so....wait, what???

Maybe those complaining about quarantine should join her; sit beside her then wait and see if she and they become infected. Show some personal bravado in the face of possible contamination and death..

Yep, she's selfish. She should understand the need for the quarantine and keep her trap shut.

The self isolation of Health care workers doesn't work.

If she wants to complain about her treatment she should direct her comments to the Nurse in Dallas and the Dr in New York.

They're the examples that forced the Government's hand to force quarantine all of these idiots.

She understands there is NO medical need for a quarantine for someone not running a fever. It's only purpose is to pander to irrational fears.

What hasn't worked about it? Who has a non-quarantined healthcare worker infected?

Who self monitored and checked themselves into treatment when they became symptomatic, and who infected no one?

OK, what?

There have been at least hundreds, likely many thousands, of U.S. based volunteers, doctors, nurses, charity and government personnel, and more go to Ebola country, do important and dangerous and admirable work treating the sick and dying and contain the spread of Ebola, and returned home to the U.S. Up to now, none have been quarantined, and none have infected a single American. So what's not working?

There have been thousands die in Africa. Doing nothing isn't going to work.

But yet has NO consideration for her own fellow Americans in the possible spread of this disease...She should know better, and just make the best of it, but no, she whines because she can't go to the local QT and infect everybody there....Good grief.

That matters not to him...One person is meaningless in his mind. Get back to him when millions here are infected, then he can blame it on the republicans for not persisting...Or maybe he'll just say we deserve it.

The point is she knows she's not putting her fellow Americans at risk. Likely thousands have done what she's done, worked in Ebola country, returned home, self monitored, and not one bystander has been infected. Even Duncan's family, the African who died of Ebola, weren't infected and they lived with him in the same house. Bottom line is a quarantine can't possibly have worked better than the ZERO cases of Ebola spread by returning healthcare workers without mandatory quarantines.

I don't think it's reasonable to call someone selfish for not wanting to act as if irrational fears are in fact rational, especially when the reason why she's being quarantined is a very unselfish act - take care of the sick and dying in Africa.

But the workers aren't doing "nothing." They are self monitoring and presenting themselves for care when they get symptoms. That strategy has worked PERFECTLY so far.

Millions aren't going to be infected here. There have been TWO people contract Ebola in this country. They (the two nurses) spread the disease to no one, and were treated and recovered. There is no outbreak in the U.S.
