He has 103° Fever, Gastro symptoms, and was in Guinea treating Ebola patients for Doctors without Borders.
Was self-monitoring at home after Flying into JFK Airport via Brussels Airlines on Oct 17.
He's in Bellevue Hospital which is ostensibly equipped for the situation. (originally a TB hospital)

These high-riskers should NOT be flying commercial flights, nor should ANYONE from those nations without at least 3 week quarantines.

Lets hope it's a False alarm and alternative like Malaria/Flu/etc.
Test results late tonight.

CBS NEWS - October 23, 2014, 3:23 PM

NEW YORK - A health care worker who recently had been to West Africa was being tested for Ebola in New York City Thursday, officials at Bellevue Hospital said.

The man, further identified by CBS station WCBS as Dr. Craig Spencer, 31, who worked with the aid group Doctors Without Borders, had quarantined himself after coming down with a fever and abdominal pains and was later transported to Bellevue, one of eight hospitals in New York State with specialized Ebola units.

He is believed to have treated Ebola patients in Guinea, the station reports.

Initially, Spencer contacted officials at Doctors Without Borders Thursday morning to report a fever, complying with the organization's protocols.
"As per the specific guidelines that Doctors Without Borders provides its staff on their return from Ebola assignments, the individual engaged in regular health monitoring and reported this development immediately," said Doctors Without Borders spokesman Tim Shenk in a statement.

Spencer called 911 after quarantining himself and was taken from his apartment in Upper Manhattan, WCBS reported. An EMS crew, wearing specialized suits, picked him up at around noon.

New York health officials will also be tracing the patients contacts to determine if there is any additional risk, the hospital said. There is currently no confirmation that Spencer has contracted the virus.
Preliminary test results are expected in the next 12 hours, according to a statement from Bellevue.

Re: Doctor being tested for Ebola in NYC

The official line is that he wasn't dangerous to anyone unless he had a fever, which was being monitored.

But now that he's come down with it they will trace all of his contacts and monitor them for 21 days. So they are speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

If they are doing this out of "an abundance of caution" then I'd say that the "abundance of caution" should have been preemptive -- he should not have been out and about while there was any doubt.

Hopefully he just has malaria or something.

I'll be surprised if it's a false alarm. A 103 deg temp is very unusual for any adult. With flu, I usually see in the 100-102 deg range as a rule, but 103 is not common at all.

Apparently he was out Bowling last night and took an Uber taxi home. (CNN)
A very quick high fever, and since WAS working with Ebola patients, it looks like Ebola to me too.

Jeez- this kind of stuff just makes me shake my head. He's a doctor, for Christ's sake. He knows what he's dealing with. I am a registered nurse. If I even suspected that I had been exposed to ebola, I'd isolate myself until it was certain that I didn't have it.

Re: Doctor being tested for Ebola in NYC

These people need to be arrested charged and convicted of knowingly putting peoples lives in jeopardy. If people die as a result of there reckless behavior they should be charged with murder or at least negligent homicide. Irresponsible behavior that endangers the general public cannot and should not be tolerated.

Re: Doctor being tested for Ebola in NYC

According to this article -- NYC hospital tests doctor who had been to West Africa for Ebola -- he had quarantined himself since returning to New York on 10/17/14.

I was therefore about to praise him for at least not wandering around the population.

But the previous link in this thread said he was "out bowling"!

So what media choice do I believe?!

Regardless, the man still flew here on a commercial flight with other passengers.

Even if it turns out the chances of him contaminating anyone when he's yet symptomatic are very rare, shouldn't those people whom he might contaminate on "very rare" occasion have a right to know such a risk was aboard the plane?

Maybe not.

But .. maybe.

Regardless, it does look like Ebola.

We can hope it isn't, though.

But if it is Ebola, at least it's not a "walk-in" case at the hospital. He was taken there in quarantine and protection, thus the chances of healthcare workers contracting it from him here in the U.S., under non-walk-in conditions, is historically zero.

Re: Doctor being tested for Ebola in NYC

His apartment is sealed of course, and his girl friend in Isolation.
He had been feeling "sluggish" for days.
Lots of irresponsible behavior by this 33 yr old Doctor.

The Equation:
They have a hard enough time getting recruits/workers without imposing 21 day quarantine before they leave, so are reluctant to be fully Responsible lest no one come.

A Harlem doctor went bowling in Brooklyn before he was hospitalized for possible Ebola.

The shocking revelation that Dr. Craig Spencer was roaming around town — after sources said he first told authorities he self-quarantined himself — emerged after the medic was hauled off Thursday to Bellevue Hospital in a protective suit with symptoms of the deadly disease.

Spencer, 33, who recently returned from the disease-wracked West African county of Guinea, was suffering from nausea and had a 103-degree fever, sources said.

Preliminary results of tests that would determine whether Spencer has the city’s first confirmed case of Ebola were expected overnight
...

We will know in a few days.

Set aside for a moment, the issue of whether this man, after testing proves to have EBOLA or not.

If you are a highly trained medical doctor, and just witnessed first hand the deaths of Ebola in Guinea, and you return to the U.S.

Whether you feel well, or not, any responsible person, regardless of whether the government insists upon isolation, would place themselves voluntarily in a mode of low public contact and make of diary of all contact they do have, just in case.

If this person went to a public gathering, such as a bowling alley, given his level of training, exposure, and change of location from Africa to the relatively Ebola free area of the United States, we have to assume that for Political or Personal motivations, he is TRYING to deliberately spread the disease!

This man is, in my estimation, A TERRORIST!

This is a clear and present danger to the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, and represents a valid case of deliberate Terrorism!

This should be immediately addressed by the White House, and the President of the United States!

Holy Hyperbole Batman!
Yes, he has Ebola.
No, he's not a terrorist.

Re: Doctor being tested for Ebola in NYC

Travel restrictions look better and better all the time.

Re: Doctor rushed to Bellevue Hospital with Ebola symptoms went bowling a day earlier

Again, this Doctor should have known enough to self-isolate and document his contacts. This is standard medical training for those sent to epidemic zones.

This doctor violated all procedures and training... WHY?

This event requires national level leadership and reassurance of appropriate action by the White House and President.

Gee wiz... the little laser temperature testing didn't catch it at the airport? (/sarcasm)

Apparently his girlfriend is quarantined for the next 21 days.... and Mali becomes a new West African country to get Ebola. It sure does get around for something that's apparently so difficult to get. :thinking

Re: Doctor rushed to Bellevue Hospital with Ebola symptoms went bowling a day earlier

His Girlfriend is now in Isolation.

Re: Doctor rushed to Bellevue Hospital with Ebola symptoms went bowling a day earlier

If anyone from the bowling alley dies from Ebola, this "Doctor" is guilty of both Murder and Terrorism.

He wasn't symptomatic when he returned. Supposedly, such individuals should self-quarantine, but apparently it seems that he didn't if the latest news accounts are accurate. This is troubling, as he is a medical professional who should understand the importance of self-quarantining.

That's going a bit too far.... he's guilt of possibly being arrogant in his knowledge and procedures to think he wouldn't contract it. But it's not murder or terrorism - just a lapse in judgement.

I sounds like what he did was grossly negligent. But good luck proving your case of murder or terrorism.
