As a Canadian who just witnessed yesterdays events here in Ottawa, I appreciate the sentiment. However, I have no desire to make our symbols of democracy and government barricaded fortresses that purposely keep our government from our people. Sure, beef up security at the White House - maybe have more regular patrols outside the fence or between the two fences, but anything much more leaves us with terrorists and crazies winning. I hope my Canadian Parliament remains open and accessible to all Canadians and to visitors from around the world - many tourists comment on and complement Canada for such openness.
I consider the white house a military compound that is grossly unguarded. Look what happened in similar circumstances in Benghazi. That compound too had low profile security in order to arrear friendly and welcoming. We are at war and IMO it is time to start acting like it. This war has come to our homeland and that is being ignored.
