Red Cross president: 'The Ebola crisis will grow'

The head of the International Red Cross is warning that the Ebola crisis will likely only get worse with the real threat of a "global health catastrophe."

“The Ebola crisis will grow," Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, told Yahoo News Deutschland. "Until now, there is no vaccine on-site, and more and more people die.”

The outbreak, which has already infected 8,997 people and killed 4,493 in West Africa, is an “epidemic of global dimension and global threat," Maurer said.

"In a globalized world it is an illusion to think that such a disease can be contained locally," he continued. "Every local collapse of a system like we see now in Liberia includes the threat of a global health catastrophe. That’s what we risk.“

His comments echo those of Anthony Banbury, chief of the U.N.'s Ebola mission, who this week warned that if the global community does not step up its efforts to stop Ebola by Dec. 1, the world will "face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we don't have a plan."

“Ebola got a head start on us,” Banbury told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday. “It is far ahead of us, it is running faster than us, and it is winning the race."

According to the World Health Organization, health officials could soon start seeing 10,000 new cases per week in Ebola-ravaged West Africa. There have been about 4,000 new cases in the past four weeks, according to the WHO.

“The virus is still moving geographically and still escalating in capitals, and that’s what concerns me,” Dr. Bruce Aylward, assistant director-general of the WHO, told reporters on Tuesday as the organization downgraded the chances of recovery from an Ebola infection to 30 percent.

The time for us to take this seriously is running out.

WHO doesn't seem to know its hole from an ass in the ground or equally likely media is screwing all the information to hell. Today I read where WHO said there should be little concern or worry about transmission of Ebola through the air, that you could sit next to someone on an airplane and have very little risk of contracting it. I also read today where WHO was quoted as saying that you could easily contract it if you were within 3 feet of someone who has Ebola.

I have questions. Ebola has been around since Christ left Chicago. It didn't suddenly appear 2 months ago. It's been around since air travel and since westerners have been air traveling to Africa and Africans air traveling to the west. It has not ravaged Africa or anything close in over 40 years. Why now?

Is Ebola weaponized? If so, who holds the patent?

If Ebola has been weaponized and patented, when did that occur? If so, what nations will spend bazillions developing a cure for weaponized Ebola? If so, why is there no antidote?

What countries and companies will make fortunes untold developing and providing a cure?

Could what we are seeing be weaponized Ebola?

Weaponized? Highly unlikely. The various bio labs across the planet have created far nastier stuff than this.

There have been Ebola out breaks from time to time. In the times before, it's been in the African hinterland, and could wipe out a few small remote, isolated villages, and stop spreading due to the lack human vectors / hosts being available.

Since this is a far more mobile world now, it's bound to spread further and faster and infect far more people that way.

We know that Ebola spreads with bodily fluids. Saliva being a bodily fluid, I think that would one way to spread it. So don't inhale if an Ebola victim sneezes on you. Still, if he does, and it's on your skin, don't know what that means. I'd say maybe. As with any virus, the closer the space between people, the more and faster it'll spread due to the denser viral load of the sneeze, for example.

There were originally rumors that Ebola was a bioweapon created by the US, and tested on an African village back in the 70's. I doubt it, because there are other similar type of hemorrhagic fevers, like Marburg.

Regardless, there are many factors for why there's an emergence of a disease. One that has an animal reservoir for a host that mutates when it jumps into cross species can come out more or less virulent. This strain is obviously highly contagious and probably at lesser stages of sickness than they're predicting. They have effective treatments like Z-Mapp and a few others, but the big pharma's want LOTS of money to quickly mass produce anything. And the politicians want to play political games with the subject.

I'll tell you now, this is pestilence and Death. It doesn't care about our opinions or desires, it can kill on a mass scale, overrun facilities and any ability to treat it, while ruining economies. It might flame out on its own, but instead it seems to be spreading, and if takes hold in the US, we're in trouble. They can either throw everything they got at this by stopping it at the source in Africa, restricting flights, producing experimental treatments and spending whatever is necessary in hope of suffocating the oxygen needed from this wild fire, or __________ fill in the blank.

I agree.

As with any viral outbreak, Ebola, measles, chickenpox, whatever, containment of the virus until it is no longer transmissible is the only reasonable course of action.

I fail to understand why such a simple fact escapes so many. When you were a child, and contacted chickenpox, did you mother send you off to school to infect the other children?

No, she kept you home until you were no longer contagious. Same principal here, just with bigger group of people and world wide, given modern air travel.

At least with restrictions and other efforts we'd have a chance, but this "it ain't going to happen here" attitude is really stupid.

Well back in the day when you had a child catch chickenpox and mumps and the like, other parents brought their kid to your house to sit with your kid. The ideology was that they wanted it over with because they knew you could only really catch it once. Kind of a sidebar I know but and interesting fact nonetheless.

Stop panicking.

You know what the leading cause of death was before vaccines and antibiotics, small pox, polio, plague, tuberculosis and common bacteria. And that was before planes and cars. Back then you were lucky if you lived long enough to get cancer or heart disease.

When I panic, I'll be hiding somewhere and not telling people the obvious. Try reading the OP article and realize, those people worry about this stuff for a living and are professionals.

I'll let Fox News' Shepard Smith tell you:

There is no Ebola spreading in America. Should that change, our reporting will change. But there is nothing indicating that it will. Best advice for you and your family at this moment? Get a flu shot. Unlike Ebola, flu is easily transmitted. Flu, along with resulting pneumonia, killed 52,000 Americans last year alone. A flu shot will reduce your chance of getting flu. So get one.

Or this:

Or this:

Doctor who worked with Ebola patients says no need to panic

A doctor from Salem who was on the front lines of the Ebola outbreak in Liberia earlier this summer believes people in the United States don't need to panic about an outbreak.

"They need to know that we're not all gonna die of Ebola … the chance of a large outbreak in this country is very, very, very slim. We have a robust health system that protects us,” she said.

Ebola is spread through body fluids, not through the air. A fever is a main symptom. People without fevers aren’t contagious, even if they’ve been exposed. Dr. Eisenhut said if people are concerned about infection they should religiously wash their hands. She also said that's something all of us should be doing anyway to prevent all diseases from spreading.

Im kinda lovin watching committed leftists rushing to trot out Shep Smiths (of Fox News fame) diatribe on the reporting of the Ebola scandal. Meanwhile...you have these irresponsible, panicky, ****heads making comments like this...

"Ebola is a crisis at our door"

"It is spiraling out of control, it's getting worse, it's spreading exponentially"

Man...someone should tell those two assholes to calm down and shut the **** up...right?

Pull your head out.

Shepard Smith is heavily invested in the sinking stock market and is freaking over losing his money.

People need to worry about someone who tells them "not to worry".

I've nearly died from pneumonia and Barr Epstein, promise you it ain't pretty.

When I look around the parking lot at night to get in my car, it's not panicking, it's called being prudent.

Well... they should.

As I said before, the #1 rule in life when facing a problem is:

1. DO NOT PANIC!

Anytime someone asks you to panic they don't really want to help you but basically want something from you. In this case, as in most cases, I'm sure it's money. And you can fund things without ****ing panicking.

The bolded is a guide to circular logic panic.

No one is going to jump you in a parking lot and give you ebola. Stop panicking.

Well it emerged in 1976 (or so), so we've had air travel quite a bit before that.

We don't know why it emerged, we have not positively identified its natural reservoir. It only emerged 40 yrs ago...the sporadic outbreaks have been since then.

It has sporadically emerged when humans came across infected hosts of the virus and then been fairly isolated to villages.

Since its manner of transmission has not changed and the virus has not gotten more virulent (deadly), I'd say your conspiracy theory about weaponization is unlikely.

War Against Disease!

The time to grow up and act rationally is running out. If we Chicken Little this, we'll just end up in a worse spot...like every other time we act like a gaggle of spineless Chicken Littles.

It's probably already too late. Give it two 21 day cycles and let's see how many known sick people there are. If it's a few or none, then GREAT! If it's in the ten's or more, I bet I won't hear from you?

If it's 10's or more, I will still not be freaking out. I'm freaking out more about the fact that the UK got a limited edition Halo Master Chief Collection option while America did not. I need that metal tin, god damned it!

If it gets into the ten's with the effort they're now applying, you'll be crapping your pants when it hits thousands a few months later.
