U.S. Nurses say they are unprepared to handle Ebola patients.....

Every conservative is just two steps away in any discussion from the welfare queen talking point.

Man, this issue has brought out the crazies.
We have about 100 million of you now. You take and you take and you take.

I agree that the crazies are out. Between you and me, it is not me. The crazies are the socialist, the Marxists, the liberals, the fascists, the Progressives, and the statists.

If it's Ebola we're talking about, 99% of the hospitals in this country will never see a case of Ebola. And it be very cost inefficient anyways to have every hospital in the US equipped to handle Ebola anyways. Best thing to do is handle Ebola outbreaks from a Regional perspective, with the regional health centers coordinating to get the rare cases of Ebola that pops up to the proper hospitals. Now if you're talking about a lack of masks and such, that's a broader issue though that isn't exclusive to the Ebola "crisis". In truth, we're not as ready for a real pandemic, and that's what we should be getting ready for, not Ebola...
I believe every case should be shipped to Washington DC.

They always disinfect them. Moreover, if the guy was coughing a lot they would have put masks on. Finally, even if they were exposed, they would not pass the disease onto anyone else until they were symptomatic.

This fearmongering over ebola is ridiculous. People need to HTFU and quit being irrationally afraid of everything.

The bolded is something that I have serious questions about. In other viral illnesses, they are contagious in the prodromal period, which is before there are really any distinct symptoms. (like that period when you think to yourself, "hmmmm. I wonder if I'm coming down with something. I just feel a little off". That would be my greatest concern.

I think you just made my point.

So should we spend more money on disease control or not in light of the Ebola outbreak? Guide us on the path of conservative health care policy.

You blaming it on the Whitehouse? How about Texas. Since when does Perry do anything the Whitehouse wants anyway?

Gotta love how the Indian chick is standing right next to the runoff.

It may be treated with bleach though. I can add soap to my powerwasher.

You keep harping on Texas.....what about Dulles Airport in Washington DC? Who were the screeners again? Who did they work for?

Really? I was thinking of Atlanta for two reasons:

1) The CDC is there and thus you would assume best equipped to handle such cases, but maybe more importantly...

2) It's close to Alabama than DC is...

jk :p

Here ya go Liz. From what the CDC has out. ;)

In the current outbreak, most new cases are occurring among people who have been taking care of sick relatives or who have prepared an infected body for burial. Health care workers are at high risk, especially if they have not been properly equipped with protective gear or correctly trained to use and decontaminate it.....snip~

Short of building a wall around West Africa (which I suspect you'd like to do in any case), stop fixating on the irrelevant. An infectious disease outbreak of this magnitude will get to the US due to modern travel patterns. It's simply unavoidable It cannot be stopped by Customs and whether it comes through Dulles or LAX, there will be more than one isolated case getting here.

This is more Stupid Talk from the Right, avoiding the issue, which is the preparation for handling Ebola cases in a rational manner.

This country has become a joke. The CDC's budget for 2014 was $11,300,000,000!!!

That's $11.3 billion... and yet an Ebola infected man can fly to the United States by simply lying to airport staff. When do Americans wake up and say that we're not making progress here?

Oh for Cripes sake...

Protective gear is supplies in all hospitals that I know of. For contact precautions, it would be gloves and hand-washing, gowns if you expect to come in contact with bodily fluids. As I keep saying repeatedly, nurses know how to do this. There is no special training. It's what we have been doing for decades.

In light of the Ebola Outbreak, we should add zero dollars to the CDC budget. Ebola isn't a threat.

When there is a (true) pandemic in this country, the CDC, no matter how much money you would throw at it, wouldn't be able to handle the job anyways and will need assistance from larger entities including FEMA and the US Military.

And before we start throwing money, let's not forget our debt is currently 17.8 trillion dollars and increasing.

What do you reckon they don't throw their gloves out, change the bedding, or take any of the universal precautions that any hospital or ambulance does in modern civilized world?

Well this is Perry's state. :)

Oh for Cripes sake...

He/she has a point. The man lied to come here, after he had been directly handling infected individuals. At least one of them died within hours, if what I'm reading is accurate.

Ebola has "burned out in Africa" many times, dating back to the 1970s. There have been dozens of outbreaks over the years, that have died down after a period of time.
It's not progress to spread it to other countries though, that have never had it before.

And it's come back each time. What's your point?

Well this is Perry's state. :)

That is total bull****. Perry and his state having nothing to do with it. This is a serious issue and you clowns are turning it into a ****ing political issue. THAT is the bull**** of this entire issue. It's a deadly virus, and all you guys can do is point fingers and talk about how inferior Texas and Perry are.
I have been a registered nurse in Texas for 30 years. We have the same standards as everyone else, and for you guys to act so stupid is a ****ing embarrassment to what is a serious issue. Growing up might be in order.

I don't know . . . Call me old fashion but I believe in medical research and technology, and that costs money.

Ebola isn't a large threat, but it is paradigmatic of the ease in which infectious diseases move around the modern world and will do so in the future. The best way to handle that is not the castle moat fear-mongering we're seeing on this thread from conservatives (which we both deplore) but more research, more best practices, more equipment, more training. All that costs money.

Cutting spending on health care has consequences. Texas has an archaic health care system when it comes to public health (it caters to the rich). It's a coincidence that ebola arrived in Texas first, but it might not be a coincidence that the hospital that first saw the patient was not following best practices.

Policies have consequences and it is appropriate to criticize the outmoded and anti-modern policies of Perry.

Ya might want to shuffle those tarot cards again.....I'm not freaking out at all. He landed in Washington DC.

Course maybe you should let those know there......ya might even get to a few before the CDC does. Just sayin!

Tarot cards? All I said is something that it could be. Ebola's early symptoms are flu-like. Didn't you know that?

Do you have any idea how staggeringly unlikely it is that someone would get infected from that water?

Maybe you could give me some stats on that or consider...

The spray could have gotten on anything within the area, a small child or pet could have come in contact with it.

YOu may as well put me on your ignore list, because you're enough of a child that I won't respond to you further. I can clearly see that to you, this isn't about public safety, or about a deadly virus, but about politics. Good day.

So public health policy isn't about public safety. Jesus Crist.

What did Perry do about Medicaid? Do you know?

Yes, appears the woman is about to walk through the water. So you know if they added bleach?
I had no idea it was Perry's job to put out a statement and calm the nation,
after all he is the Gov of Texas and not the President.

"Speaking Monday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said there was still a "very low" likelihood the Ebola virus could mutate in a way that poses a threat to the United States.

"Right now, the risk of an Ebola outbreak in the United States is very low, but that risk would only increase if there were not a robust response on the part of the United States," Earnest said."
