Video shows trooper shooting unarmed man, South Carolina police say

South Carolina trooper shot unarmed man, police say - CNN.com

The man was pulled over for a seat belt violation. He trooper gets out, asks him for his ID, the man turns to get it and the cop starts barking orders and shoots him for fear he is grabbing a weapon.

Another ridiculous shooting from a cop so scared he shoots because of a perceived threat. He asked for the ID and then assumed the guy was going for a gun.

Luckily though the guy lived and the cop is no longer on the force. I don't think should get 20 years, it just looks like he should really not be a police officer if he is that jumpy. Maybe a couple of years and banned from ever owning a weapon or serving in any kind of authoritative role.

Edit: Also, thank god that cop is a terrible shot or else the guy would be dead with a few slugs in his chest. He only took a single bullet to the pelvis.

Yep, that looks like a bad shooting to me.

Guess you missed the part were he was given the medal of valor from his department a year ago.
Bet if you had been shot at before, you would be alittle jumpy too.

So much for the people who say to just do what the cop tells you to do and there won't be a problem.
I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it.

Come on, he totally over reacted. He asked for some id and the guy went for it. Maybe he shouldn't be asking for people to reach for things if it makes him jumpy.

Yes, I would be jumpy. And if and I were both that jumpy and a police officer, I would resign.

Then by all rights he should NOT be in the field, I am sorry but as an officer there is an assumption of risk that one must accept, to be able to perform the job properly. If one cannot assume it then one should not be in that position. Personally I think officers should not be able to use lethal force unless it is absolutely clear that lethal force was used against them first.

So what are you saying, we should just let this go and...? There has to be some accountability for these things. If he had killed the guy this would be a disgrace, luckily he is so jumpy he missed almost all of his shots and only shot him in the hip.

We all make mistakes and then have to pay for them, why should police officers be any different? If a surgeon does a fine job on 9 patients then kills the last one from a terrible mistake, do we just let it go? Of course not.

Like others have said, if he is so rattled by what happened earlier he should have already resigned.

I've read the "you ask how high when the police officer asks you to jump" comments too. They obviously weren't thinking that would still get you shot.

Ironically the policeman was a really bad shot - if he'd been more accurate and brought his man down dead the discussion would be that the "perp" was obviously going for a gun.

When you become a danger to the public you serve then you shouldn't be armed or a police officer.

I'm not convinced law enforcement should be carrying weapons regularly.
