Chelsea Manning sues to get transgender medical treatment

(CNN) -- Chelsea Manning, convicted of espionage and imprisoned at Fort Leavenworth, has filed a lawsuit in federal court, claiming she "has been denied access to medically necessary treatment" for her gender disorder.
The inmate once known as Bradley Manning announced in August 2013, the day after her court sentencing, that she is female. Manning is suing to follow grooming standards such as growing her hair longer and using cosmetics, and to receive hormone treatment "in order to express her female gender," said the suit filed Tuesday in district court in Washington.
"She brings this action to compel defendants [Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and the federal government] to treat her serious medical needs consistent with their obligation under the Constitution," said the suit. If the requests are denied, said Manning's lawyers, she "will suffer continued pain, depression and anxiety and is at an extremely high risk of self-castration and suicidality."
A Kansas judge in April granted the former Army intelligence analyst's request to formally be known as Chelsea Elizabeth Manning.

I totally agree.

What Chelsea is asking for goes way beyond the basic medical care that the government is obligated to provide.

If Chelsea can pay for it, then let Chelsea do it. I don't have a problem with that scenario.

It's amazing the care I do not have for Manning. If he wanted to be a chick, he shouldn't have wound up in jail. Too bad, so sad, don't care.

In addition to all the other classified material he made public, Manning also exposed about a quarter million diplomatic cables...and many of those cables would have mentioned names - and because they mentioned names, not only the government of those nations but other groups - drug lords, terrorists, cartels - would have been able to identify people who had been either under surveillance by or in contact with the U.S. government. I would say that the probability is close to absolute that some - and perhaps many - people (and perhaps their families) got hurt or killed because of what Manning did. I might be a proud left-wing liberal progressive, but Manning (and Snowden) gets zero - repeat, ZERO - sympathy from this retired Navy man.

Manning is just an attention whore...Giving him coverage for his stupid claim for the government to pay is just feeding his sickness.

Longer hair, maybe.
Cosmetics, if she buys them.
Hormone Treatment, if she buys them.
Oxygen, well, if we must.

Tell the freak traitor to pay for it his/herself.

I have been struggling with this for a while now. If a panel of psychiatrists and/or psychologists say it is necessary then I will say, yes, provide it. If not then dont provide it.
