George Washington Farewell Address
Categories: Citizenship
Date: September 19, 1796
Citizens by birth or choice of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations.

George Washington address to the New York Legislature
Categories: Citizenship
Date: June 26, 1775
When we assumed the Soldier, we did not lay aside the Citizen; and we shall most sincerely rejoice with you in the happy hour when the establishment of American Liberty, upon the most firm and solid foundations shall enable us to return to our Private Stations in the bosom of a free, peacefully and happy Country.

Samuel Adams in the Boston Gazette
Categories: Citizenship
Date: April 16, 1781
Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual - or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.

Benjamin Rush Plan of a Federal University
Categories: Citizenship, Education
Date: 1788
While the business of education in Europe consists in lectures upon the ruins of Palmyra and the antiquities of Herculaneum, or in disputes about Hebrew points, Greek particles, or the accent and quantity of the Roman language, the youth of America will be employed in acquiring those branches of knowledge which increase the conveniences of life, lessen human misery, improve our country, promote population, exalt the human understanding, and establish domestic social and political happiness.

George Washington letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island
Categories: Citizenship
Date: September 9, 1790
The citizens of the United States of America have the right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights, for happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.

George Washington Letter to the Governors
Categories: Citizenship
Date: June 18, 1783
At this auspicious period, the United States came into existence as a Nation; and if their Citizens should not be completely free and happy, the fault will be entirely their own.

George Washington Letter to the Governors
Categories: Citizenship, The People, Virtue
Date: June 18, 1783
It is . . . [the citizens] choice, and depends upon their conduct, whether they will be respectable and prosperous, or contemptable and miserable as a Nation. This is the time of their political probation; this is the moment when the eyes of the World are turned upon them.

Alexander Hamilton From the New York Evening Post: an Examination of the President's Message, Continued, No. VIII"
Categories: Citizenship, Liberty / Freedom, Republican Government
Date: January 12, 1802
The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education, and family. The opinion advanced in the Notes on Virginia is undoubtedly correct, that foreigners will generally be apt to bring with them attachments to the persons they have left behind; to the country of their nativity; and to its particular customs and manners. They will also entertain opinions on government congenial with those under which they have lived; or if they should be led hither from a preference to ours, how extremely unlikely is it that they will bring with them that temperate love of liberty, so essential to real republicanism?

It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself, and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influence may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn.

Our country is in danger, but not to be despaired of. Our enemies are numerous and powerful; but we have many friends, determining to be free, and heaven and earth will aid the resolution. The eyes of the world being thus on our Country, it is put the more on its good behavior, and under the greater obligation also, to do justice to the Tree of Liberty by an exhibition of the fine fruits we gather from it.

Our own Country's Honor, all call upon us for a vigorous and manly exertion, and if we now shamefully fail, we shall become infamous to the whole world. Let us therefore rely upon the goodness of the Cause, and the aid of the supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is, to animate and encourage us to great and noble Actions - The Eyes of all our Countrymen are now upon us, and we shall have their blessings, and praises, if happily we are the instruments of saving them from the Tyranny mediated against them. Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and shew the whole world, that a Freeman contending for Liberty on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth.

George Washington General Orders

The hour is fast approaching, on which the Honor and Success of this army, and the safety of our bleeding Country depend. Remember officers and Soldiers, that you are Freemen, fighting for the blessings of Liberty - that slavery will be your portion, and that of your posterity, if you do not acquit yourselves like men.

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

Not if they werent aware of this predilection/slant/perspective. School board members dont exactly run on 'platforms' and sadly, I bet most parents dont pay much attention anyway.

Now maybe they will. I think that the attention here is a good thing.

You're assuming that the voters weren't aware of the person's slant, and you're also assuming that they don't approve of the person's slant.

I know what slant the board members have when I vote for them. And I expect them to live up to my expectations.

Yeah, these school board members campaigned on these changes, and the people in the community supported those changes

That's why they're protesting the changes....because they support them.

Once again .... the community isn't protesting them. The students are, because they were riled up by teachers who are pissed off because they didn't get the pay raise THEY think they so richly deserve. Don't make it something it isn't ...

Wrong. The community also opposes the changes.

In response, hundreds of students, teachers and parents from high schools across the Jefferson County school district, the second largest in Colorado walked out of school, the Times reported. “Sympathetic parents brought poster board, magic markers and bottles of water,” according to the Times.

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

Actually, you're wrong ... there was very little participation by adults (other than teachers) in the so-called protest. The community elected this school board based on their approach. Most still support that ... there are a few outliers, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

There is a cautionary tale here, though ... the teachers have no problem using your kids as tools. These kids have been manipulated. Sure makes you feel comfortable about sending your kids to school when they get indoctrinated, instead of educated.

I'm with the students on this one. Complete bs on the part of that school board. No curriculum should be biased or censored, just straight facts.

Facts are fine, but liberal academia isn't interested in facts.

They're hell-bent on promoting their political agenda.

But I appreciate your Alinsky attempt. Blame conservatives for what you do, so they have to defend themselves for your actions.

Didnt assume anything. That's why I wrote "if."

My kids think this whole thing is amusing. The reaction of my oldest was "They don't even know what they're protesting but everyone knows protests are cool. You get a chance to get out of class and piss off your principal."

That's probably about right. Some students would be interested and have some inkling about the controversy, but for the most part, they won't.

Eh, while I have serious professional ethical problems having teachers enlist students in causes to benefit the viewpoints of the teaching body, I must say few groups are above using kids to promote an agenda. Kids are an effective tool and probably will be exploited from time to time.

I think this ugly attitude toward young people explains why nobody under 65 votes for Republicans anymore, unless they live in a compound in the desert, or a trailer park in the South.

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

I think government-run education is dangerous.

Ummm.....Are you suggesting that private ED would be less likely to drive an agenda?

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

What is your definition of "civil protest"? I can't answer the question about Bunker Hill until you define it. As far as the Declaration of Independence, you're not seriously equating that to a bunch of high schoolers deciding what curriculum they want to study, are you?

Yeah, hi. You’re posts are not very clear. It was reported on CBS News this morning that one of the changes the school board wanted in the texts was to leave out all of the civil protests that have happened, so what you’re referring to with “civil protests” I have no idea. Please clarify what you want me to speak to. In order for to you speak about Bunker Hill you would have to know what it was: it’s not a trick question,

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

Popular imagination would think that as soon as a ancient native people stepped on a territory back over 12,000 years ago, the same people lived there until the Evil Europeans took it from them.

North and South America Natives were constantly warring and moving. Just like Europe. You think the boundries of Poland were always the same?

I was refering to the ancient Pueblo people, the Anasazi:

The Ancestral Puebloan farmers were relatively successful in the Four Corners area for over a thousand years, but by AD 1300 they had left the entire region. Long-term climate changes that reduced crop yield may have been among the reasons that the Ancestral Puebloans finally moved away from their former homeland.

Sorry, but what you're saying doesn't add up against the history as I related it to you. I ace you very psecific answers to your alleged points and you keep jumping around.

Re: Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum

well your reading is something to be desired...the subject is the foundation of america............you need to get you dates straight....the tea party was in 1773....the first continental congress met in 1774

i stated clearly, that the founders tried to work with the king, they sent him petitions of their grievances as however he ignored them, and they continued to try to work with the king, when he THREATEN THEM they turned to revolution.

revolution forged this nation, laying its foundation....not protest.

No; he subject is 1000 high school kids walking out of class. And what dates are you talking about? Tres drunks asked what the foundation was; apparently she doesn't know or simply can't ask the question she wants answered. The founders working with the king means nothing to the over all point of cvil disobedience and armed conflict as a solution.

revolution forged this nation, laying its foundation....not protest.

So, the kids are absolutely right then.

As I said, there were a few parents there ... but, look at the pictures. To assume that this fiasco somehow had significant parental support is a mistake.
